GSW @ the Auckland BJJ open
Ok some quick results from yesterdays competition in Auckland:
White under 74kg:
1st Rob Long
2nd Adan Tijerina
Blue under 74kg:
1st Jonathan Bares
2nd Michael Hourigan
Blue under 94kg:
1st Hemi Pou
Ripped: Kupu Vanisi:
Kupu should have had silver in the white open but as the whole day was run so poorly he was robbed in his division.
Congrats to Cam and Dan for their efforts as well.
I know they are both pretty disappointed but as we all know it’s pretty difficult to go out there and win your first comp of the bat.
Dan was pretty much against the ref in his fight as the guy wasn’t even looking at the match, so he was robbed.
Cam did good in his fight but knows where he went wrong and what things need to be worked on.
It was a good day and everyone did us proud, as they always do.
We have a great bunch of guys and a fantastic attitude to our training which I think clearly shines through when we compete and interact with other clubs.
I still believe that I’m a munter and my fear is that that is being passed onto you guys, but having watched the attitudes, skills and actions of other schools I can safely say we are doing very well, thank you very much.
Also for a club that apparently has a reputation of having mostly Big “Strong guys” it was our lightweights that tore through the opposition. And our big “Strong Guy’s” who were some of the least munterish.
Well done to all the GSW crew for making the effort to get to Auckland and have a go.
Jonny and Miguel in the final for the under 74kg Blue
Jonny Bares MMA debut
Jonny had his first MMA fight last night, Saturday 15th September, he faught on Rex Reddens “Cage Wars” card in Porirua.
Jonny has been training like a mad man at Lockdown MMA with Gareth and Alex. He’s also been working extensively with Dave Low the Wrestling coach at Lockdown. Jonny’s opponent was Matthew Colquhoun (68 KG) of Mana MMA – Wairoa. Here’s a quick run-down of the fight:
Jonny’s opponent throws a big overhand right which glances off Jonny’s left cheek, Jonny does a beautiful double leg take down and passes to the left side.
Matthew does a classic head squeeze and also holds Jonny’s shorts. Ref tells Matthew to let go and Jonny transitions to front control. Matthew scrambles to his knees still trying to squeeze Jonny’s brains out.
Jonny ends up sprawled on Matthews turtle, Matthew once again cautioned for holding Jonnys shorts, when he lets go Jonny jumps up and preforms his patented outside head arm guillotine.
Ref (Damian Smith) steps in and ends the fight as Matthew is tapping like Fred Astaire, Matthew try’s to claim he wasn’t tapping just trying to escape. Ref has none of it and the fight is ended, don’t know the exact time but about 30-40 secs in R1
Congrats to Jonny, all the hard training has clearly paid off.
Sunday 10 Sepember 2007 BJJ fundamentals
Smallish class tonight with only about 20 on the mat.
We started off with a quick warm up and an Armbar drill.
Well the Armbar drill didn’t go as smoothly as I had hoped so I changed my plan for class and we covered the basic armbar from mount and all it’s fine points and then flowed into what steps to take in order to breakdown pour opponents defence.
Eg dealing with them grabbing their own arm and defending the armbar, we covered several ways and concepts to overcome their resistance. Good progress from everyone and a good class overall.
Again we were graced with a couple of special members, Brad Kora was on the mat, having just put some more finishing touches to the highly anticipated album, he found some time to come down and hit the mat for a class and some grappling. Brad and Stu have both impressed me with their progress and work ethic by blowing the stereotype about isolated grapplers. Their progress and grappling skills as well as their technical knowledge is a pleasure to see, Brad in particular shows his addiction to BJJ is paying dividends and his skill on the mat is growing everytime we see him.
The other extremely pleasant surprise was the return (albeit for a short time) of Dion. It was a real boost to me to see him again and to have him on the mat is a great feeling, welcome back D.
Take care see you all tonight!
