Fundamentals – Sunday 28th October

Warm Up

Hooks Guard Drills

The hooks guard involves both of the legs being hooked with the ankles in between the opponents legs, feet controlling behind their knees

1 – Sit-up and Superman

  • Take a hooks in position while the other person kneels
  • Sit up, underhook their arms on either side grabbing the lats or the shoulders and scoot your hips in close
  • Lie back keeping their upper body close, lift them with your hooks and raise their arms out to the side by flaring your elbows
  • Your partner stops the momentum with their hands (if they’re averse to face-planting) and you sit back up again
  1. Let go of your grips, lie back then sit up and repeat

2 – No hands

  • Take a hooks in position while the other person kneels.
  • The objective of the person kneeling is to pass your guard; your objective is to stop and/or sweep them
  • The person passing has to do so without coming up onto one knee
  • Neither person can use their arms

2a – One arm

Same as above, but you can both use one arm and the person passing can come up on one knee

2b – Everything

One person tries to pass, the other tries to sweep – no restrictions on limbs

Did a few rounds of pass or sweep, starting with the above restrictions then progressively taking them away.

Basic Circuit

The basic circuit incorporates a series of fundamental movements and positions in BJJ

One person takes closed guard – legs crossed around the back of your partner

The other:

Begins to pass the guard

  • Posture up – straight back, looking straight ahead
  • Control their chest with your left arm, their hips with your right
  • Drive your right knee into the base of their spine and base your left leg out to about 7′oclock
  • Keep your right thigh 90 degrees to their spine to prevent them sliding up your leg
  • Bring your left palm to the inside of their right knee
  • Push your hips back and push down with your palm to break their legs open – pull your right arm back to your hip simultaneously
  • Get under their right leg with your left shoulder
  • Touch their knee to their nose by driving off your feet in a straight line
  • Keep that pressure on and walk your legs around to the left (their right side)
  • Shrug their leg off your shoulder as you get round to 90 degrees

Takes side-control

  • Apply your weight chest to chest with your legs out behind you on the balls of your feet
  • Control their far arm with your left arm and their near hip with your right

Switches their Base

  • Replace your right knee with your left knee and apply your weight to their face with your left lat
  • Use your right foot to brace behind you in case they attempt to lift you off with their hips
  • Grab their far knee with your right hand and pull their knees toward the floor
  • Swat your right foot over to the other side of their hip without lifting your weight off

Takes mount

  • Keep your body low, slide your left arm to the left side of their body so you end up facing your partner

Attempts a choke

  • Sit up, grab high on their left collar with your left hand – fingers in grip – to threaten a choke

Is swept by a bridging escape

  • Person underneath brings your elbow into the centre of their chest using both arms
  • Blocks your left ankle with their right foot
  • Bridges their hips up to drive you forward then rolls over to their right

The circuit begins again with the original positions reversed
