Sunday the 17th of Feb Fundamentals

1:Tonight we stated with our partner in Side control. We would then use both forearms to hold our partner in place by our knees and bump up, bring our right leg through swing it round and pull our whole body through and bring our partner into our guard. They would then go into postion number 2

2:Basic Guard pass. This is when we are in guard, we posture back and get good grips along our partners jacket with both hands. The idea is to open our partners legs so we posture back and stand up on our left leg keeping our leg well back and out of reach of our partner(If our partners head is at 12:00 try to imagine our leg at 7:30).Push our partners right knee while moving our hips back towards his feet.As his legs open up we pull our right elbow to touch our thigh.Reaching under his right leg with our left arm we get a good grip on his jacket right up by his left lapel. With our shoulder we drive forward taking his right knee towards his face.Driving your left elbow to the mat beside our partners head we rotate our upper body slightly to the right sliding his leg past our face(keeping the pressure on at all times to make it uncomfortable)We then come back into side control.

3:Basic sweep: We have our partner in our closed guard and have our right arm in his collar and are controlling the right hand. Our partner has stood up on his left leg to pass our guard.Control his right arm and his upper collar.Uncross your ankles and pivot on his left leg.Swing your hips back and slide onto our right side.Slide your right leg through and bring your shin across his stomach. We then pull are partner forward to off balance them so the weight is off their legs.Scissor your legs causing them to fall to the left and follow over onto the mount position.

4:Basic armbar from Mount:We have the mount position and have smothered our partners face with our chest to make them want to push us up.He then does this.We circle the right arm with both our palms on his chest and prepare to rotate clockwise.pushing with both hands we kick both our legs out and slide down his arm to the right(Sliding down the bat pole). We then land under our partners right shoulder, squeeze our knees together hold his hand strongly to our chest with his thumb pointing upward and flex our left leg so we can lift our hips high enough to be able to dislocate the shoulder

5:Armbar from Side mount. This is when we have gone from mount to sidemount position because our partner has turned onto his right side.We are sitting on our left leg and our right leg is over his mid section. We use our right had to hook under his left bicep to secure his arm.We then sit on his right shoulder, kick out our left leg and sit down on our butt bringing the left leg over to trap his head.Just like in arm bar 4 we weld his arm close to our chest thumb towards us, squeeze the knees and lie back briging our hips

6:Variation on armbar 5:This is when we are in mount and grab his right sleeve and bring it over to his left shoulder, slide up and take side mount position again and repeat the rest of the steps in number 5

We then put it all together doing the various moves

Class Photos Thursday 14th February

I took the opportunity on Thursdays rolling session to take a few photos of the class.
The aim was to see if the lighting would allow any good shots and also to see if I could capture the feel of the school.
A lot of the images we use on the site are simple ‘group’ shots and don’t convey the work on the mat.
So some of these shots are good representations of what it is we do at GSW and you can clearly see the fun everyone is having even while working hard at grappling. Hope you enjoy them.

Sunday the 10th of feb Fundamentals

Today after the warm up we started with Chokes.

1:The first one I refer to as the “Rev Choke”After Rev John Jensen. This is where we grab the Lapel with our right hand on our opponents right side just about half way down the pecs.We then bring the Lapel across their neck so our between our tumb and fore arm we are blading the neck. Our elbow will be up creating a gap.In the gap we now bring our left hand through and as if we were starting a Lawn mower through the hole. This will close the gap and bring on the choke quickly.

2:The next choke was on from all furs from head to head sprawl position. With our right hand we get  our fingers inside grip on the opponents right collar and pull it across his neck to our right. Our left hand comes behind his right arm and up onto the back of his neck-palm facing upwards.Pulling his collar strongly upward with our right hand drive our head under his right flank and roll to the left pulling him over as we do.Straighten our arms and switch our base so that we can bring our left knee under their neck to make space necessary to pull collar towards us and bring the choke into full effect.

3:The next choke was the same setup as choke 2 only this time with our right hand we pull his right hand in to create space and bring our left arm in as close as we can to his body.We then grab our left bicep with our right hand and squeeze lifting our right arm up bringing on the choke.

4:The next choke was the lapel half nelson choke. The opponent has turned onto his side and you have secured sidemount position. With your right hand under his right arm, pull open his right or top lapel.Slide your left hand under his head and pass his top lapel from your right hand to your left hand.Get a grip with your left thumb on the inside of his lapel.Your right hand still under his arm goes behind his head.Straighten out both arms as much as possible pulling upward with your left hand while pushing down with a straight right arm

5:The last one was the same setup as choke 4  but this time they lock down trapping your right arm.you still have the collar with your left hand.Step off and place your left knee in the back of their head and pull your left hand in towards your knee

Thursday the 7th of February Fundamentals

First of all we started with the basic sweep

1:This is when we have our partner in guard with left hand gripping their collar and the other grabbing their (in this case) left hand in the centre of our chest. We then place our legs on the mat and hip out to the right bringing our right leg across their stomach.Still keeping the grip in the collar we pull our partner towards us,at the same time sweeping them with our left leg. This should take us onto the mount position.

2: The next sweep was still the guard position, and still going for the basic sweep only this time, dragging the arm across our body. This example is the right arm.We then came  up and hugged our partner placing out left hand under their left armpit. This does 2 things.1 Traps the arm so they can’t pull it out, 2 sets us up to go back under our partner at least 3 times to bring them to a 90 degree angle, so as to off balance them.  We then kicked our right leg to the top of our left should and sissor sweeped our partners opposite leg bringing us to mount and still being able to trap the right arm

3:The next sweep was a variation of sweep number 2.We still trap the arm, and go under at least 3 times, but this time we cuff the Gi pants. The lower we can get with this the better (preferably down  by our partners ankle). We then drop left leg and kick right to left shoulder and lift up our partners leg we have cuffed. This should bring us to a point we can dismount into side control

4:Here is another variation on sweep 3.We have gone to all the trouble of setting things up(Going under, grabbing the right leg etc) only this time they post the opposite leg(in this case the right leg) which means we can’t get the sweep. We grab their left arm and trap it behind our right ear(remember they are still off balance from our under under under technique)only this time we do a left kick to our right shoulder and sweep with our right leg

5:This last sweep was from hooks guard and called the arm drag sweep. We grab their right arm at the collar and launch ourselves back taking our partners arm with them.we then place our right arm in between there both arms and fall back, kicking our right leg up and left leg out.Our partner is swept onto his back and we trap his right arm in between our elbow and knee.We then spin around and come up onto our right shoulder placing all our weight into our partners  chest. This puts alot of pressure on them. With our right arm now we come up under their right armpit and grab the collar.(Remembering that we still have our right shoulder in their chest). We then bring our left hand to the opposite side of the collar-thumb in and bring our forearm across their throat and drop our weight onto the floor in a side control position for the choke.

Thursday the 30 January Fundamentals

Tonight We started off on Mount position while our partners bucked and bridge a little to get us us to this position Key points were staying low

Next we were in the same postion again but this time we cupped our partners head with 1 hand and with the same arm placed our elbow in their sternum, spiking them to make it uncomfortable to shut them down

Next we were in the same mount position again and did what was called the Superman-which is placing our calve muscles under our partners and with our pelvis thrust forward placing all our weight into their stomach. This made it difficult for our partners to move with the pressure.

We now put it all together and made our partners buck and bridge, and when it got to much we used either the cupping of the head or the superman move to shut them down.

The next part of the class were for the one’s underneath mount

The first move was to buck and bridge until we could grab one of our partners arms to lock their elbow into the middle of our stomach’s with one hand and the other clasp behind their Tricep (same arm). Then on the same side we placed our foot trapping theirs and did a Bridge and roll over to be in their guard

for example. If we trapped the right arm, then we would trap the right foot of our partners as well.

The next move was a bridge to 1 side and bring the leg through to get a hook, from here we could bridge to the opposite side to get the other hook

The nex move we covered was the bridge to elbow knee escape which involved bridging through to one side and bringing our elbow to our knee. This made it difficult for our partner as it put them off balance.from here we could launch them off to 1 side

The last move was the Marcello Garcia move. This involved being underneath with our partner on mount without their legs being locked under ours.we then placed our hands in their hips and did a big bridge locking our arms elevating them up enough to bring our legs through placing our partners on our hooks.

key point to remember. We are not trying to bench press them, we are using the momentum from the bridge to lock our arms.
