Sunday The 22 June Fundamentals

Tonight we started with the Roll over Drill

1:Here we were sitting on the mat with our elbows and knees touching (In a ball)Looking over our right shoulder, and tilting our head to the left we would rollover our right shoulder until our right foot touched the mat.We would then push back with this foot back to our original position. We would repeat this agian only the opposite side.Look over our left shoulder, and tilt the head right and rollover our left shoulder and push off with the left foot to the original sitting position. We would repeat this over and over.

2:The next Drill was the same again only this time we would rollover onto our knees and scoot back to where were were.We did this for left and right over and over.

3:Basic sweep-Here we had our partner in our guard,  and they came up onto their left leg(positioning it at about 7:00) to try and pass.We had our right arm in their collar and our left arm controlling their right arm.We then uncrossed our locked legs, and using their left leg as a pivot against our right leg, we would hip out as far as possble to the right. We would then slide our right leg through so that our right shin was touching their stomach. We would then stretch ourselves forward in a straight line pulling them off balance,so that all their weight came off their legs.We would then scissor our legs making them fall to the left and following them over to mount.

4:Hooking sweep-Here we had our partners in the same postion as the Basic sweep, only this time they had placed their left leg at about 9:00 instead of 7:00.Using the same grips as Basic sweep,we would then lock our right leg and use their left leg as a pivot and hip out to the right again. This time we would try and kick ourselves in the butt with our right leg to create space and place our right foot under their left knee (Called a hook). From here we would pull them forward again, and lift our right foot up as we did this, causing them to fall to the left, following them over to mount again.

5:Back Sweep-This time our partner would stand up in our guard and beacuse our legs were still locked it would cause us to be lifted as well with only our shoulders on the ground touching the mat.We would then unlock our legs causing us to drop our butts to the mat.squeezing our knees together and grabbing both of their ankles with our hands we would do 2 things at one(Push them back with our kness and pull their ankles forward) sitting them on their butts. From here we would sit up and post on our right hands, and grab thier left Lapel with out left hand.Coming around using short little posts with our right hand, it would bring us to the mount position again.

6:Front sweep-This time again our partner has stood up in our guard but is leaning forward. We would then placed our feet in their hips(Toes turned out) and control both their sleeves with our hands. We then pushed them back to initiate a forward reaction from them, lifting them up over us(Knees slighty bent). From here we would tilt our head to the right and as Geoff likes to call it(Look into their ears for any Wax) and roll over our right shoulder, causing them to roll over.We would then follow them over with our feet still in their hips stretching them out following them over to mount.

7:Hook and Reap Drill-We quickly finished off with the Hook and Reap Drill which Jase has just posted recently

John Will Seminar Wed 25th June

As most of you should know by now John is returning to Wellington on Wed. He is currently teaching in Hamilton and will head to Napier tonight.

The Wellington seminar will start at 8pm sharp! We have several formalities to get through first. There will be a few new ranks awarded this time around so be early and on your best behaviour.. The seminar will run for approx 2.5 – 3 hours so be ready for a long night.

Thursday 19th June Fundamentals

Tonight we started off with a basic pass side control drill

1:Our workable partner had us in side control, we placed our forearms against there side, and pushed them down so that they were touching our thighs.we then did 3 key things:Bumped up,bridged away, and slid our lower leg through across there stomach so that our knee was poking out the other side.We then used this knee as a pivot to swing around and place our Partner in guard

2:This time we did a guard passing exercise with our partner on our hooks, but were were only allowed to use 1 hand, and our partnerwas only allowed to come up one 1 knee. The object being for them to try and pass guard and for us to stop them from doing that

3:The next exercise was the same only this time we were allowed to use both hands and both hooks and our partner could do the same, with the object of passing guard

4:This next exercise was when our partner was standing, and we had control of there cuffs, and had our feet placed in their hips(toes out) , we would then moved one foot at a time to place our feet in their biceps, then back to hips, then place our feet behind the knees one at a time, then back to hips, then biceps, then hips and so on…The idea being to hold our partner off to try and unbalance them and make it awkward for them, even if they moved from side to side forward and back jus to keep them at bay ready to off balance them.

5:This exercise was the roll over drill. We would sit on the mat and have our knees and elbows touching. We would then looked over our right shoulder, tilt our head to the left and roll over the right shoulder and let our right foot touch the mat, then push off and come back to our orignal position. This time we would look over our left shoulder and tilt out head to the right and roll to the left and let our left foot touch the mat and push off again to come back to our sitting position.we kept going over this. All the while keeping our elbows and knees touching.

6:Front sweep:Just like in exercise 4 our partners have stood up (are leaning forward)and we have control of their cuffs and have our feet placed in their hips(Toes pointing outward). We would then give them a little nudge backward to get a forward pushing reaction from them. With slightly bent knees we would lift them up and bring there head towards our (Checking for wax in their ear as Geoff would say). Then using the skills we developed in exercise 5(The rollover Drill) look over our right shoulder tilt our head left and roll over our right shoulder so they do a Roly Poly onto the mat and we follow them over to mount.

7:Back Sweep:This time our partner has stood up and we still have our legs wrapped around them in guard. We then uncrossed our legs and dropped our butt to the mat and grabbed their ankles. We then nudge our kness into their stomach pull their ankles towards us(Push-Pull motion) and dropped them backwards. We would them come up onto our right hand and do a series of little pushes tucking our right leg in following over to the mount position.

Sunday 25th – Fundamentals

Sit-up and Superman

  • Take a hooks in position while the other person kneels
  • Sit up, underhook their arms on either side grabbing the lats or the shoulders and scoot your hips in close
  • Lie back keeping their upper body close, lift them with your hooks and raise their arms out to the side by flaring your elbows
  • Your partner stops the momentum with their hands (if they’re averse to face-planting) and you sit back up again

NB: Scooting the hips right in close helps destabilise your opponent, takes them off their base and therefore makes sweeping them a lot easier

Progressive Pass or Sweep with Hooks

In each case, one partner is using their hooks to prevent the other from passing. Obviously then, the other person is trying to get past their hooks and toward side-control.

1. No hands – each person has to use only their legs to either defend or pass the guard. Additionally, the person trying to pass has to stay on their knees.

2. One hand – each person can now use one hand to pass or defend; the person passing only has to keep one knee on the ground.

3. Unobstructed – both partners can now defend and pass without restriction (except the usual prohibitions on eye-gouging, fish-hooking etc)

Open guard drill

I

  • one partner stands

Partner playing guard:

  • feet on their hips
  • grip their sleeves just enough to stop them getting free

Work on moving from hooks, to hips to elbow control

So:

  • start feet in hips

then

  • left foot in their right elbow
  • right foot in their left elbow

Back to the hips

  • left foot hooks behind their right knee
  • right foot hooks behind their left knee

In other words – hooks guard

Repeat back and forth to get used to moving between the controls.

Key: Keep the pressure on, forcing them slightly off balance at all times e.g. pushing against the hips, pulling your hooks, pushing the elbows.

II

Partner provides basic resistance by moving about as you shift between the positions.

III

Partner steps forward.

  • grab the ankle of the forward leg,
  • put your leg in their hip on the same side
  • hook their other leg behind the knee with your other foot
  • push the hip to unbalance them
