Thursday the 30th of October Fundamentals
Knee ride Drills.
1:Last night we started with basic knee ride, with our right knee over our partners stomach, and used our left leg as an outrigger balancing on them and placing our hands on their shoulders. They would move from left to right and we would have to control them.
2:Knee ride and control again, but this time we had our left hand in the back of their collar(thumb down) and our partner would move from left to right again but hip away. When this happened we would drop to side control still controlling them.
3:Knee ride, with left hand in their collar, and grabbing their right leg. They would try to hip out but we locked our left arm against their face proving near on impossible for them as we had control of their head, middle and legs.
4:Same position as drill 2 but when we dropped to the ground,we would bring our right knee into their right hip making it difficult for them to hip out.
5:Drill 1 position(Knee riding the right side) but we would place our hands on their chest for control. We would turn our hands so that our fingers were facing their legs, run around to the left side to knee ride(so this time we would have our left knee on their stomach, and our right leg as the outrigger.again turning our fingers to face their legs and running aound to knee ride on the right side again, alternating over and over.
6:Knee ride on the right side, and spinning around to a 45 degree angle placing our right knee into their collar bone on the same side.Alternating back to knee ride, then back to the collar bone.
7:We put it all together starting from knee ride, our partner would give us problems by moving left to right, hipping out etc.Depending on the move our partner would go to we had to use one of the drills above to respond to the situation.
8:From knee ride we would capture the back of our partners right elbow with our left hand.Placing all our weight on right knee,we would step over their head with the left leg,sit down and wiper blade the right leg up.Squeeze the knees together, weld their little finger to our chest and lie back for the armbar.(Note)This is a variation of the near arm bar in the Bluebelt syllabus with the only difference being with this we are starting from knee ride. With the near arm bar we jump to knee ride from side control.
9:Here we took knee ride while our parnter moved around, and had the choice of near arm bar,far arm bar,or spinning choke which Geoff covered last Sunday
Reminder:John Will is coming on Wednesday the 26th of november.Get in quick because the mat is filling up fast, and you don’t want to miss out.
Sunday 26th October BJJ Fundamentals
With a smallish group of about 24 I decided to do something a bit more advanced again as a treat for those who took time out of their Labour Weekend holiday to come and train.
We started with some basic Kneeride skills. Working on balance and recovering side control when we are dislodged from the position. Drills covered, basic balance and co-ordination while our partner moves about, transitioning to side control when our knee hits the ground and controlling the collar with our left hand to assist our transition to side control and also help set up our attack.
The first attack we attempted was a spinning choke, or baseball choke.
With our left thumb in the back of their collar we proceed to slip our right hand in the opposite collar, thumb up, and close the gap between our forearms. From their we transition to a tripod position 90 degrees from where we started. Our feet are positioned either side of our partners head, spread wide and our head is to the right of their belly with our left shoulder on their belly. To apply the choke we lift their head up off the mat.
From here we completely changed positions and now we have our partner in Guard and have the same grip as before. Left thumb in the back of the collar and right hand inserted in the other side, fingers in. This puts no pressure on our opponent and often they do not know there is any danger. We attempt a bad sweep in order to bait our partner to pass our guard to the right. Then we spin under and apply the choke.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iPL03I55YiE
If they defend they will be using their hands to block or frustrate our grips, so we move until we came roll them onto their back and then simply transition to the Spinning choke again.
The last attack is a simple forearm choke. this time from knee ride we have a grip on the near collar with our Right hand (fingers in) our left hand is gripping their right elbow and we’re hunting for the near armbar. Our partner defends by pulling down their right arm and holding with their left, leaving their neck open. We then quickly ‘chop’ our little finger of our left hand into the far side of their neck and grip their Gi. We then transition to side control and place as much weight as possible on our left forearm applying pressure to their throat for the tap.
Thursday the 23rd of October Fundamentals
1:Back Sweep:We started off with our partner being in our closed guard(legs relaxed and feet locked). They stood up with good posture, and we went up with them for the free ride.We grabbed the backs of their ankles, and let go our legs, and brought in our knees. From here we did 2 things simultaneously (1)Pulled our hands towards us (2) pushed our knees back, causing them to fall back.Grabbing their gi collar with our left hand and posting on our right hand,we came up and did a series of little posts coming around to mount.
2:Front Sweep:Here we started again with our partner in guard, and standing up,only this time they had bad posture and were leaning forward. We placed our feet both in their hips, and grabbed both gi cuffs with our hands.Pulling them forward and balancing them on our feet(Legs not to straight or bent) we moved our head to the left and moved them forward so as Geoff says “check their ear for Wax”.Rolling them over our right shoulder, pulling their arms back as we go,we rolled over to end up in mount position stretching them out.Remember our partner was working with us on this one by tucking their head under to avoid face planting into the mat.
3:Again our partner is in our guard and we dropped down.Placing our right hand behind their left ankle, and swinging around 90 degrees to put our right foot across their right hip.We then came up onto our right shoulder, and swung our left leg over their left leg,so that our groin was above their left knee.simultaneously pulling their left leg forward, and our feet back we forced them to sit back on the mat,but the position we ended up in was between their legs.We had to get from being here to the outside of the left leg,so we swung over the leg and trapped their the grabbed the foot, squeezed the knees together and slowly stretched back for a knee bar. With knee bars their is no give so exteme caution should be used.
4:Here our partner is in our guard again and stands up with one foot forward(In this case the left). We grabbed the left cuff or wrist, placed our left foot behind their knee(Hook) and our right foot in their left hip.We did 3 things simultaneously (1) pushed our right foot back (2) pulled their left foot towards us with our right hand (3)pulled our left foot towards us.When they fell back we just onto their left leg trapping it and coming onto one knee ready to pass guard.
Sunday the 19th of October Fundamentals
1:Last night we started off with the Basic Armbar drills covered in the BlueBelt Syllabus, which if you refer back to the 5th of this month, they are written up.
2:This drill was where we were standing in our partners open guard, and they had their feet in our hips, and controlling our right sleeve with their left hand.We pushed their right leg down off our hip,and hooked their left ankle by rotating our right hand clockwise around and catching the foot so that it was under our right armpit. We then sat down and brought our left knee in between their legs, and our right leg over to the right side of their body(essentially trapping their left leg). From here we rolled right over to our right hand side onto our front, and stretched our upper body away from them, extending their foot out for tap.
3:Same setup as drill 2(Standing in our partners open guard). We rotated our hand Anti -clockwise now trapping their left foot.we Pushed their right leg away, and stepped through our partners legs 180 degrees so that we now had our back to our partner. We then slide down their leg and sat on their left hip.Rolling off to the left side now we still had their left ankle trapped, we brought our left hand and face under their foot, and extended away from them slowly until they tapped.
4:Same setup as drill 2 again trapping the left foot under our right armpit and having the blade of our right hand under their left ankle. We sat down again and brought our left leg between their legs, and welded our knees together trapping the leg.Clasping our hands together slowly extending back for the Tap.
************Please note that when doing knee bars and foot locks, there is no give like arm bars, so extreme caution should be used at all times**********
Thursday the 16th of October Fundamentals
1:Tonight we started with feet in our partners hips, and our right hand grabbng the right hand side of their collar keeping the distance, and putting the pressure on them. They would move forward and back, and from left to right, and we had to maintain the distance. To keep the pressure on them we also put our right fist into their throat to make it more uncomfortable.
2:This drill was the same setup ans drill 1 only this time our partner pushed our right foot to the ground, with their left hand.We then did 4 things:(1) placed that same foot behind their left knee(Hook)(2)Used our left foot to push their right knee back(3) pulled them forward(4) raising our right foot up to sweep them over onto mount.
3:Same position as drill 2(They push the foot down) but this time we grabbed their right hand and swung it to the right side of our body(Arm drag),and came up posting on our right hand.We then swung our left hand over to grab their left Lat.Swung our left leg over to take their back.We then got both hooks in and swung our left hand underneath to grab their left forearm.Pulled them forward to flatten them out onto the mat.
4:This time our partner pushed the foot down and came around to our right hand side.As they were coming around we swung our left hand over to grab the left lat again, and went through the rest of drill 3 again.
5:Here are partner pushed our right foot down again, and posted on their right hand for balance. We maintained control, posted on our left hand(transferring all our weight onto it).Taking our feet back and stepping away.
we then put it all together with different scenarios our partner would give us, responding to each one accordingly with the above drills.
6:Geoff then covered the”Oh Shit Mechanism” drill. This is when we were standing facing our partner, and they would aim a big right hander at our head.We then did 2 things:(1) ducked down to avoid being hit (2) brought our left and right hands over our head as if we were rubbing hair wax in our hair(muttering to ourselves”Oh Shit”).We then closed the gap and came around to their right hand side, swinging our right arm around their stomach, coming around to take the back.We then swung the right hand over their neck, bumped their butt with our hips, pulling them so they sat on our knee.Once they were on our knee,we closed the gap further by walking our right hand up as far as we could to our left shoulder, taking away all the space, and blading our left hand(Palm facing us) between our face and the back of their neck resulting in a rear naked choke which we covered a few classes ago.(from whe our partner was on all fours).
Sunday the 12th of October Fundamentals
1:Tonight we started off with the Basic Armbar form Guard:We have our partner in guard and secured their right arm into the centre of our chest. We then opened our legs and slid our left foot into their right hip,so they couldn’t pull their arm back.We then did 3 things simultaneously.(1)sat up (2) turn 90 degrees to the right(3) cut our right leg over their back.We then swung our left leg over their head, with our calf cutting over their neck.We then bridged up making sure our feet were pointing towards the sky and our knees were locked, for the Tap.
2:Figure 4 from guard:We have covered this off in some recent previous classes. Our partner is in our guard and places their hands on the mat.We grab their left wrist, with our right hand, let go our legs, and come up and wrap our left hand around theirsand grab our own wrist. From her we lay back and kicked our right leg over their back, brought their left elbow to our chest making sure it was at 90 degrees, and rotated the lower arm up for the tap.
2A:Again another recap from the other night:Instead of doing all the work of drill 1,we latched onto their left wrist again with our right hand, let go of our legs and with our right leg kicked their left arm towards us,swinging the leg over their back, getting the 90 degree angle again rotating the lower arm up for the tap.
3:This time we went for thearm again, and they lock their right arm to our body given us no space. We then jumped back to create space, wrapped our left arm around their neck,so that our bicep was at the back of the neck ,and our forearm was blading across the front of their neck.We then brought our right hand in front of their arm and clasped hands.Lying back down into guard and slowly raising both hands for the Guillotine.
4:here we were in Guard again, and grabbed their right arm and arm dragged it over to the right hand side of our body,at the same time opening our legs.We then swung our left leg over their body to take the back, and placed our hooks in.We then grabbed their left forearm with our left hand, and launced ourselves forward causing them to fall flat on their face.
5:Rear Naked Choke:Here our partner was kneeling and we knelt behind them.We swung our right arm around their throat, and grabbed our left shoulder,as tight as we could, taking away all the space. We then brought our left hand up (Palm facing us) and bladed in between our face and the back of their neck taking away whatt little space was left, bring on the choke slowly.
6:Here we put drill 4 & 5 together in one move.Arm drag, take the back, hooks, pull them forward onto their face, swing the right arm under their throat grabbing our left shoulder, blade our left hand between the back of their neck and our face bringing on the choke.
**** Looks like John will is returning on the Weds the 25th of November. This is something you don’t want to miss.Geoff will keep you posted with more details soon***************
Thursday the 9th of October Fundamentals
1:First Drill tonight we recapped figure 4 from Guard. We have our partner is our guard ,and they make the mistake of putting their hands on the mat.We grab their left wrist with our right hand(Keeping it close to our body as possible)We then open our legs sit up and grab our right wrist with our left hand, and roll back.We then hip out to the right 90 degrees, and place our right leg over their back, and stretch it out slightly.Make sure that the elbow is in the middle of your chest, and at a 90 dgree angle, and slightly rotate your hips so they are not flat on the mat,and rotate their arm up for the Tap.
2:Figure 4 from Mount:Here we are sitting on mount, and our partner has both arms locked on their chest by their face,as if they were going to cover their face from us punching them.We grabbed one forearm(in this case the right hand side),with both hands, and locked our arms together straight, and used our body weight to push their arm down to the mat,so their arm was locked at a 90 degree angle. We then brought down our right elbow, and shave a couple of inches off their ear(as Geoff likes to say) and brought our left arm underneath ,and locked our wrists. We then slowly dragged their arm down and up for the Tap.
3:Fig 4 from side control:This time we had side control, and our partner has gone for the underhook with their left hand.We grabbed their left wrist with our right hand, grabbed our right wrist with our left hand under their arm, used our left knee to anchor their face down, and slowly rotated their elbow up for the tap.
4:Here we had the same postion as drill 3 only this time our partner turned into us.We blocked their right hip with our right hand, and came around to North/South,and our left hand was under their left armpit. We then came up to a Tripod crushing into their stomach, and knelt down so our legs were either side of their head. From here we grabbed their left wrist with our right hand, and grabbed our right wrist with our left hand, came up onto our right knee and put our left foot into the small of their back.Locking their arm at 90 degree’s with the elbow locked into their chest, slowly rotating their arm around left, for the Tap
We then put it all together starting in guard(Fig 4) then sweeping our partner onto mount(Fig 4),then stepping off to side control(Fig 4),then coming around to North/South (Fig 4)
Sunday the 5th of October Fundamentals
1:Tonight we started off with the Basic armbar from mount. We are on mount, and our partner pushes us up with both hands. We circle their arms with ours(in this case our left hand circles their right arm first,as this is the arm we want to armbar)We then pushed up,swung our left leg over their head, slid down their arm and sat down.Brought our right knee up,squeezed the knees together, thumb to our chest, and slowly leaned back bridging the hips for the Tap.
2:Far Armbar from side control; Here we are in side control, with our right hand cupping their left shoulder.(so we had the underhook)We then posted on our left hand right by their left ear.Spiked out right elbow into their ribs pulling thm onto their side.We then spun around over their head, and placed our left foot into the small of their back, welded their thumb to our chest, squeezed the knees, and lay back for the tap.
3:Near armbar from side control:Here we were in short base side control, and used our left hand to grab their right elbow at the Gi.we then used our right hand to make a fist, and jumped up to knee ride, putting our knee into the middle of their stomach,at the same time pulling their right hand up,making it very uncomfortable for them. From here we put all the pressure onto our right knee, and stepped over their head with our left leg, slid down and anchored their thumb into the middle of our chest. We then squeezed the knees together and lay back for the tap.
4:Armbar from guard:Our partner is in our guard, and we have secured their right arm into the middle of our chest(left hand grabbing their wrist and right hand grabbing the right tricep). We then opened our legs and slid our left leg into their right Tricep, and used this as a pivot to swing around 90 degrees, and our right leg swung over their back. From here we swung our left leg over their head trapping the arm, squeezed our knees together pointing our toes up towards the ceiling, and bridging the hips for the tap.
5:We then put it all together:Starting with Mount, then to near armbar, then to far armbar, and our partner would roll into our guard for the armbar from guard. We did this over and over, and the one’s that were co-ordinated did it from both sides.
Thursday the 2nd of October Fundamentals
1:For the first drill last night we did a recap of Sunday’s(28th) class Drill 3.Figure 4 from Side control. Our partners goes for the underhook while we have them in side control. We grab their hand and place it on the mat,at 90 degrees.Loop our own hands to grab the wrist.Step over their head and raise the arm for the Tap
2:Here we had side control again, and were blocking our right hand at their left hip.Using our right knee we put it into their left armpit, and kept our weight on their shhoulders while coming around to North/South,securing their head.We then grabbed thier left wrist with our right hand, and looped our left hand to grab our right wrist to a 90 degree angle.Secured their elbow into our chest, and slowly rotated to the left for the tap.
3:Here we had the same position as drill 2(Side control, with right hand in their left Hip),only this time, our partner hipped away from us.This gave us 40 percent of what we wanted which brought their head closer allowing us to step over their head to North/South,secure the arm,and go for the figure 4,exactly like drill 2.
4:This drill was the same as 3,(Side control, blocking hip coming around to North/South,and they hip out)only this time they blocked our leg so we couldn’t step over their head.We just came right around to the opposite side.Because we still had control of their left arm,we pulled it down at the Bicep, and walked away, placing them flat on their back.Note:You can also use your chin to pull them down as you walk back.
5:Here we did the same steps as drill 4,but this time instead,of them being flat on their back, they were on their side trying to get away.We secured left arm Jumped up and stepped our right leg over their head.Locked our knees together, secured their arm to our chest(Thumb inward),and layed back bridging out hips for the arm bar.
