Thursday the 27th of November fundamentals

1:Tonight we started with a hooks guard warmup. Our partner was on our hooks. They would move forward and back, then come up off one knee,we would pull them forward trying to off balance them. They then sat back down and would come up off the other knee, and we would try off balance them again, over and over.

2:This drill our partner was on our hooks again with their hands on our knees. We would come up again and got the double underhooks with our hands clasped together in a monkey grip.raised up our elbows, and rolled back onto our back, lifting our feet up as we did so.We would place them on their knees again, roll onto our back, then come up again to get the underhooks and monkey grip again, repeating this over and over.

3:Same setup as 2 but this time when we came up we would cup our left arm under thier right shoulder, grab their right arm with our left hand(Locking it to our left side).Placing the top of our head under their chin on their left hand side.Rolling back onto our left shoulder we then did 2 things with our legs simultaneously (1)Kicked our right leg up (2) Kicked our left leg out. They would spin over to their back, and we would come to side control.

4:Exactly the same setup as drill 3 but this time before we came to roll we would move our butt about a foot to our right.Rolled back onto our left shoulder, same leg kick out,and our partner would roll onto their back. The reason for moving our butt to the right was that it made it easier for us to end up in side control.

5:Again same setup as drill 3(Hooks in,underhook on our right side,Head down under their chin, their right hand secured to our left side). This time though we took our right hook out and placed it to the out side of their left knee.Exactly the same roll over, and kickup with our right  leg. They would end up on their back with us in side control.

Sunday the 23rd of November Fundamentals

It was extemely muggy tonight and alot of people on the Mat

1:Our partner was on their knees and we had our grip in theri collar and feet in their hips. They would move forward and back, left to right, and we would have to keep the distance and maintain control.

2: We would have the same grips. Our aim was to sweep them, and their aim was to pass our guard around to side control.

3:We did 20 minutes of pass or sweep. We would get what ever grips we wanted and then would say go.They would try to pass around or we would sweep them.Whatever the outcome we would leave the mat to join the queue.

Thursday the 20th of November Fundamentals

Wow last night we had over 50 on the mat,so that was good to see but lack of space.Geoff talked firstly about immediate action and having an answer for every postion you find yourself in.There is a reference to it on John wills blog www.bjj.com.au. click on news then go to johns person blog.If you aren’t signed up to it you need to be. There are some sheets on immediate action that John has developed from every position you can print off and go through.

1:Last night our partner started on all fours, and we had side back control. We placed our right hand under their right armpit, and our partners aim would be to pull thier right arm in like a chicken wing trapping our arm,and dropping their right leg flat rolling us over.

2:Same setup as drill 1 again but when we placed our right hand under their right arm,we brought our left hand under their neck and clamped the right and left hand together(Like a seatbelt). They would roll over and we would go with them. They would roll back to all fours and we would follow them.

3A:Same set up as drill 1,but as our partner would go to roll we would drop back and sit on our butt,(Bascially faceplanting them on the mat) also making it near on impossible to roll us over.

3B:Same setup as drill 2 (Seatbelt clamp). Our partner would roll us over and we would follow onto our back. They would really have no where else to go so they would lift their butt off the matt as an option.Once they did this we would swing our right leg underneath, take the back and get our hooks in,and making sure our right arm was under their neck and touching our left shoulder-(Point)When you have your hooks in make sure you aren’t crossing your feet,as your partner could put pressure on them with their feet possibly causing injury.

4:Same drill as 3B(seatbelt,roll,Hooks) This time we would take our right hook out and push their right hand down trapping it under the right hand back of our knee.We then placed this hook back in again giving us the option of a cutting armbar,or rear naked choke.

Sunday the 16th of November Fundamentals

1:Back control warmup drill.Tonight we started with being underneath and our partner being in a Tripod position.we would duck under their  right arm, swung our left arm over to their left lat, swung the left leg over to take the back. From here we would duck under ther  left arm, swung the left leg underneath so we ended up in the starting position on our back.We then started the drill over again.

2:Same setup as drill 1,but when we got their back, they would roll over.We ended up sitting down with our partner between us.We set our hooks, and grab an over/under girp with our hands.

3:Same as drill 2 but when we got the over under postion with our hands, our partner would push our left hand down.We swung our right hand under their chin and grabbed our left shoulder(or as close as possible) to take out all the space. We then bladed our left hand(Palm facing us) in between our face, and the back of their neck, for the Rear naked choke.

4:This drill we went for the rear naked choke again but they would pull our right arm down in defense. We placed our hands in a gable grip, bladed the right hand over their neck (so that their throat was in between our forearm and thumb)We then pulled our right arm back bringing on the choke.

5:Drill 4 setup, but our partner defended the choke and started to hip to the left.As they did this we swung them to the right coming to mount. We trapped the left arm into their throat with our head, and swung the left arm under so the back of their neck was in the V of our arm.We then grabbed our left bicep with our right arm, placed our left hand on their forehead and pushed our body forward for the Head/Arm choke.

6:Going back to drill 3, we went to go for the rear naked choke but they defended. We cupped their left bicep with our left hand.Pushed them down between our legs, came aound 90 degees to the  left, and swung our right arm over their leg.Squeezed the knees, welded their little finger to the centre of our chest, and lie backwards for the armbar.

7:We then put it all together. So our partner would just lie their but they would go full on 100 percent either. We would roll and depending on the situation go for any of the above drills.

Thursday the 13th of November Fundamentals

1:Last night we started off with a warm-up.Our partner was in our guard sitting back on their heels.Their aim was to stay upright, and our aim was to break it down and pull our legs forward, and pull them in close to us so as they would vertually headbutt the mat. They then started to get grips on our Lapel. As soon as this happened we would try to break the grip and pull them forward to get them close and low.

2:This next drill we had our feet in their hips, and our right hand was grabbing their collar, and left hand grabbing their right sleeve. They would move forward and back, left and right. We would wait for them to drive forward. As soon as this happened we simultaneously placed their right arm over the right side of our body, and kicked our right shin into the back of their left armpit sweeping them over.

3:Same setup as drill 2(Securing their right arm into the centre of our chest).Coming around 90 degree’s by kicking our right leg over their back, and swinging our left leg over their neck(making sure our  left calf muscle was cutting ino the back of their neck). The whole point was to trap their left arm between our legs.We then squeezed our knees together, and bridged up for the armbar.-A point to note here was to keep our hips flat.

3A:Here was a variation on drill 3 where we would have the armbar setup but were slightly to far away.We grabbed their left gi pant or ankle, pull that up into the air,and pull our ankles down to sweep them over onto their back.We then scooted in squeezed our knees together, welded their little finger into the centre of our chest, and layed back for the armber.

4:Feet were in hips, and we had the collar pulling them forward, but we pulled them forward to far to the right side,so there was no space. We would swing our left leg over to take their back.

5:Same setup as drill 2 again(Feet in hips, right arm in collar),only this time we pushed our right arm back in  their collar to create space. We then pushed our left hand under our right arm to the opposite side of their collar, and tried to get our hands touching each other,or as close as possible so they we around their neck.We then turnd our wrists in so our thumbs were blading on their neck for the choke. If they didn’t tap to that we pulled our elbows down to create more pressure.

6:Feet in hips and right hand in collar again. We pushed their left arm away, brought our right leg up and bladed across the back of their neck.We then swung our left leg over our right ankle(so the knee was over the ankle, taking away all space in the gap).Grabbing their  right arm and bringing it over to the right hand side of our body,we bridged our hips for the Triangle.

6A:Same setup as drill 6 but in going for the Triangle, they sat back on their heels making it difficult for us to lock on the Triangle.Instead of bringing their right arm all the way across our body,we brought it into the centre of our chest(Little finger welded into the centre). We then bridged up and went for the cutting armbar.

7:Feet in hips, right hand in collar but this time our partner would pull back ,making it difficult to pull them forward. We posted on our left hand, swung our legs back to sit on our knees, keeping the pressure on,and pulling down on their collar

Sunday The 9th of November Fundamentals

1:Tonight we started off being in side control, with both our partners arms across our body(elbows on the mat).We would bump up,swing our leg through, coming around 90 degrees, and place them in guard. 1B:Same postion again but this time our partner would have their right hand blocking our right hip,and the left hand cupping our left shoulder. We would buck and bridge to get our left hand under their right armpit(Underhook).Once we had the underhook we owuld hip away to the left until their was enought space to turn and go to our knees and on all fours.1c: Same position again but our partner would move from the the first 2 postions and allow us 5 escapes from each before upping the pressure.Depending on what postion they had us in,we would have to decide what drill we were going to use.

2:(For those of us who have ever rolled with Hemi and know how hard it is when we are on his hooks,he somehow captures our hand behind his head(either left or right)by coming up and cupping and pulling our arm back behind his head, straightens it out for a cutting armbar,Geoff showed us the counter) We are on our partners hooks and they come up to grab our right arm.We push down their right leg and suck our elbow back close to our sides to avoid them grabbing our arm.Placing our head in the centre of their chest.we stepped off the right hook, kept low and walked around to the left side, killing the left hook to side control.

3:This time our partner has managed to grab our arm and place it behind their head. Before they can get the armbar our priority is to get the trapped elbow as close as we can to the  mat.Kill the right leg by pushing it down to the mat.Head goes into the centre of the chest, and we walked around to side control.

4:Same postion as drill 3 but this time they would sweep us with the right hook over to the left side.(this was better than being armbarred)

5:We would get swept like drill 4 but when we hit the mat we would jump to half guard because our partner still had their left hook secured,so all we had to do was wrap our  left leg around their leg,or we would get off the hook and come around to side control.

6:This time our partner would secure the right arm and go for the cutting armbar so we would go for drill 3.As we came  around to the right side, they would counter by grabbing our left arm behind their head.We would have to reverse our postion by killing the  left hook and walk back around to the left side(Remember to keep your butt low when killing the hooks)

Thursday the 6th of November Fundamentals

1:Tonight we started on  mount and  rested on our partners forearms(keeping low and sprawled). They would buck and bridge forward, and we would have to ride it out and keep control. The main point being to keep low and tuck your feet under their legs for control.

2:Same as drill 1 only this time they would buck and bridge left and right. We would keep low and cup the back of their head with 1 hand depending on what side they would roll to.So if they rolled to our left,we cupped the back of their head with the right hand and posted on our left hand.

3:Same again but as our partner gave one big buck to either the left or right side,we would come to side mount. From here we would give them some space,so they would come to their knees. We put our hooks in,and placed our left hand under their left arm to grab the forearm.Pulling their forearm back, and thrusting forward we squashed them down to the mat.

4:Putting it all together our partner would buck and bridge forward, and go to the left and right, then give one big bridge and roll to either side.Depending on what side we would give them some space to come to their knees.Put our hooks in grab the forearm, thrusht forward to flatten them out.

5:Rear naked choke from knees. Our partner was on their knees, and we were behind them. Our right hand goes under their neck and gets as close as possible to our left shoulder. The Idea being to take out as much space as possible..With our left hand we raise it up and blade down between our face and the back of their neck, taking away what space is left.

6:Putting it all together. They buck and bridge,we let them roll over to their knees.Take hooks, squash them down, bring our right hand through for the Rear naked choke.

7:Geoff then covered the”Oh Shit Mechanism” drill. This is when we were standing facing our partner, and they would aim a big right hander at our head.We then did 2 things:(1) ducked down to avoid being hit (2) brought our left and right hands over our head as if we were rubbing hair wax in our hair(muttering to ourselves”Oh Shit”).We then closed the gap and came around to their right hand side, swinging our right arm around their stomach, coming around to take the back.We then swung the right hand over their neck, bumped their butt with our hips, pulling them so they sat on our knee.Once they were on our knee,we closed the gap further by walking our right hand up as far as we could to our left shoulder, taking away all the space, and blading our left hand(Palm facing us) between our face and the back of their neck resulting in a rear naked choke which we covered a few classes ago.(from when our partner was on all fours).

Sunday the 2nd of November Fundamentals

1:Tonight we started with the Basic Guard Pass:We are in our partners closed guard and we we postured back(to put pressure on their ankles). With good grips on our partners gi jacket with both hands(in the centre of their chest). We stood up on our left leg keeping it well back and out of reach of our partner(If our partners head is at 12:00 try to imagine our leg at 7:30),and the right knee is in the centre of their spine. We then did 2 things simultaneously(1)Pushed their right knee with our left hand(2)sucked our right arm back to our right leg(As Geoff says either 2 arms in or 2 arms out). As their legs opened up we hooked their right knee under our left shoulder. We then drove their right knee into their face and walked around to the right hand side(keeping the pressure on at all times to make it uncomfortable)Coming around to side control We switched base so that our  left lat was on their face. From here we grabbed their left leg, pulled it down, swung our right leg over to mount.

2:Starting in guard again our partner passed our guard(explained in drill 1) but this time when they came around to side control we had our arms up on our chest so they landed on them.We then pushed  them down with our forearms so they were touching our thighs. We bumped up,and swung our body around 90 degrees and swung our right leg through bringing them back into guard. They would pass again, and we would continue over and over.

3:Here we had long base side control(Legs stretched out) and were resting on our partners forearms driving into them and dropping our hips down.We then walked around 90 degrees to north/south keeeping the pressure on by keeping our hips down. When we got to north/south we brought our knees in so they were squashing their face.Stretching out again we came around a further 90 degrees, switched base so our right lat was on their face, grabbed their right leg, swung our left leg over to mount. We then placed our right lat over their head, dismounted to side control, came around to north/south,back 90 degrees to side control mounted, dismounted etc

4:We had mount and we resting on our partners forearms(keeping low and sprawled). They would buck and bridge forward, left and right. We would have to ride it out and keep control. The main point being to keep low and tuck your feet under their legs for control.

4A:Same postion as drill 4 but as our partner gave one big buck to either the left or right side,we would come to side mount. From here we would give them some space,so they would come to their knees. We put our hooks in,and placed our left hand under their left arm to grab the forearm.Pulling their forearm back, and thrusting forward we squashed them down to the mat.
