Sunday the 22nd of December Fundamentals

Well here’s the last post for 2008.

1:Far armbar from side control. Here we had our partner in side control with both hands cupping their left shoulder. We placed our left hand right by their left ear as a post, and came up and spiked our right elbow into their ribs, while still cupping their left shoulder. We then came around to North/South position. From here we put our left foot into the small of their back and spun around so our right leg was over their face, still controlling their left arm.We then squeezed our knees together welded their little finger to our chest and lay back slowly for the tap.For those who felt a little bit more confident, they would just spin around, instead of going to Norht/South.

1A:Slight variation on drill 1.We had side control, and the left shoulder secured. This time we put our right knee into the centre of their stomach, posted up on the left hand, and spun around locking in the same grips as drill 1, (foot in the small of their back, squeezed knees, finger welded to the centre of our stomach).Lying back for the tap.

2:We had our partner on our hooks. We came up and got our right hand underhook, and left hand overhook.Placing our head lower than their chin we rolled over onto our left shoulder, and kicked our right hook up and left leg out. This swept them over and we followed them over to side control. From here we secured their left shoulder and went into drill 1.So we started out having hooks and ended up doing the far armbar. For those who felt confident, we had the option of going left or right.

3:Bridging escape:Our partner is on mount, with their hands spread out on the mat.We placed our hands in their hips(locking our elbows to our ribs). We brought our feet right up and bridged up.As we bridged we locked our arms straight suspending them in mid air leaving a gap to bring our knees through sitting them on our hooks.(The trick to this move is not physically trying to bench press our partner, but to use the bridge as leverage and then lock the arms.)Once sitting on our hooks, we did the over under sweep to side control, then far armbar.

4:Here our partner had us in side control. We placed our left arm on their right shoulder creating space, and blocked their left hip with our right forearm. We pushed them down to our thighs, and bridged up creating enough space to bring our right and left knee under to get the hooks. From here we did the over under sweep to side control, then far armbar.

5:Here our partner had us in guard. We locked our elbows in tight to our  ribs, and nailed their butt to the mat by holding down their hips.We shuffled back to pop open their legs, and brought our right knee up.We pushed down their right leg,and did what was called a knee through pass.(brought our  right knee over the top pinning thier leg down). Our left leg acted as an outrigger  posting out at 7:30.We dropped our right hip down placing it on their right hip and got the underhook. We ended up in side contol cupping the left shoulder again. We then proceeded to go for the far armber.

Geoff later spoke about looking for a submission from every position, and replicating it from everywhere. He also spoke about transitioning to get yourself into a postion where you can get your favourite submission. If you are stuck on your back for example, what do you have to do to get to a position to get your favourite sweep or submission.

I would just like wish you all a Merry Christmas and happy new year, and thank Geoff personally for his constant support and hard work continuing to make GSW the place it is.We are very fortunate.see you on the Mat in the new year.

GSW Christmas Hours 2008

Our last class for the year will be Wednesday the 24th and we will re-open on Sunday the 4th of January 2009.

I’d just like to say a huge thanks to Shano for all his efforts on posting the Fundamentals classes on this news page. Mammoth task and I greatly appreciate his dedication to keeping this section of the site updated. Thanks Buddy!

Thanks also to all the GSW crew for making the club one of the best schools I have ever been associated with. It’s the members that make GSW what it is. Thanks Guys and Girls for all you dedication and support through another stellar year. Next year will be massive.

Have a great Christmas and remember to love your family and friends while there still here, because when they’re gone it’s too late to tell them how you feel and what they mean to you!

Take care

Geoff

Thursday the 18th of December Fundamentals

2 new Blue’s last night.Dan and David so congratulations to you both.

1:Our partner had mount. We would bridge so to simulate banging their forehead into the mat.As they placed their hands down to stop this, we trapped their left arm and welded it to the centre of our chest, placed our right leg to the outside of their  left ankle, and then bridged them, and rolled over our right shoulder. They would end up in our guard. We placed our hand in their sleeve.Hipped out to the right and swung our right leg across their stomach, pulled them forward and swept them over to mount(Basic Sweep). We would then start the drill again.

2:We had our partner on our hooks. We came up and got our right hand underhook, and left hand overhook.Placing our head lower than their chin we rolled over onto our left shoulder, and kicked our right hook up.This swept them over and we followed them over to mount.

3:Bridging escape:Our partner is on mount, with their hands spread out on the mat.We placed our hands in their hips(locking our elbows to our ribs). We brought our feet right up and bridged up.As we bridged we locked our arms straight suspending them in mid air leaving a gap to bring our knees through sitiing them on our hooks. The trick to this move is not physically trying to bench press our partner, but to use the bridge as leverage and then lock the arms.

3B:Exactly the same as drill 3 but when we brought the knees through and placed our partner on our hooks,we went through the over under sweep(Drill 2).

4:Elbow escape:Our partner has mount. We dropped our right leg to the mat,and locked our right elbow to their left knee.We hipped to the left to create space, enought to bring our right leg through. We then hipped to the right creating enough space to bring our right leg through. From here we had our partner on our hooks, and went through the over under dill  2 to sweep them to mount or side control.

5:We had a choice to drill one of the above depending on the situation our partner placed us in.

Geoff also explained he table analogy.A table will fall over if you take one of the legs away. This is the same as a sweep. All it takes is to take and arm or leg away, and to follow in that direction for the sweep. He also explained that is you commit to a move, then follow through. It takes alot more effort to change something half way through.

Last class is Wednesday the 24th of december and classes will return on the 4th of Jan.Keep an eye out on the forum as there might be some people rolling in between.

Sunday the 14th of December Fundamentals

1:Tonight we started off with the basic arm bar:We had mount on our partner and we sprawled across them,so our chest was resting on their forearms smothering them. They pushed us away by extendning their arms away(Arms fully extended). We circled their right arm with our arms, and placed our hands on their chest(Note that our right hand was on top of our left hand)We them jumped up to a squat, and placed our left foot by their right ear.We then stepped over their head with our left leg, and slide down their arm(Batpole).Once here we squeezed our knees together, welded their little finger to our chest, and slowly lay back extending their arm for the tap.

2:same drill as 1 but this time we had 2 people lay beside us left and right with a bit of space. We would first go to the right side and perform the armbar.Ending back in the middle, we would then mount the left side person and do the armbar, end back in the centre and proceed to the right again, repeating this over and over.

3:Again same as drill one but this time the whole class lay on their back with space between each of us.We ran through the whole class.THis gave us the chance to practice left and right over and over.

4:Same again but we went back to our partner and rapped out 20 left and right.

5:Here we had mount, with our right hand in our partners collar on the right hand side. They would go to grab our arm to bridge us.As they did this we would swing our left knee up to behind their right ear,sit on our right leg,so we could swing our left leg over their head.Trap the right arm as we sat down. From here it was the same as drill 1.Squeeze the knees and trap the little finger.Lie back for the tap

Thursday the 11 of December Fundamentals

1:Our partner was on their knees and we had our  right hand gripping collar, and our left hand gripping their right sleeve cuff. Our feet were in their hips. They would move forward and back, left to right, stand up and sit down.We would have to keep the distance and maintain control.

2(A):Starting with the same Grips as drill 1,but this time we placed our right knee in their bicep, swung our left leg over to their right hip so our shin was across their stomach, let go over their collar with our right arm, and came up off our back, and spun around to the right 90 degrees to grab their left gi pants at the ankle with our right hand.Lying back down in this position and on the same angle,we pulled our left knee down. This caused our partner to load onto our right shin.We then launched them off this sweeping them onto their back.

2(B):Another Variation of drill2(A):.This drill started out getting the same grips then placing the left knee in their right bicep and right foot across the stomach.Differnce now was instead of coming up and going to grab the gi pants etc, our partner would walk around to try and secure side control. This action caused them to load up onto our left knee, and like drill 2(A) we launched them over onto their back.

3:Here we had half guard on our partner. We hipped so we were on our left hip,and grabbed their right gi at the wrist. We swung their arm right around 360 degrees as if try to slam their arm into their butt. This cause a momentum.Beacuse they could post with their right hand this caused them to roll over.Because we had the half guard we took the free ride from this momentum and roll over to our knees, and they ended up in our half guard.

4:Same as drill 3 but we would alternate with our partner ,then try doing both sides.

Sunday the 7th of December Fundamentals

1:Tonight we started off with the Basic sweep:We have our partner in our guard with our right hand in their collar, and left had gripping their right sleeve. They go to pass by putting their left leg back to 7:00 where we couldn’t grab it.We opened our legs and hipped out to the right hand side, and swung our right leg so the shin was across their stomach.(Our left leg was dropped to the mat).Stretching our upper body forward,we pulled them off balance and swept them over onto mount posisiton.

2:Hooking sweep:Same grips and postion as drill 1 but this time instead of our partner putting their left leg our to 7:00,the brought it out to 8:00 so it was just out of our hand grabbing it.We let go our legs, and used their left leg as a pivot with our right leg and hipped out to the right.Kicking ourselves in the butt we brought this leg back and circled our right foot under to get the hook.Stretching our upper body back like drill 1 we pulled them forward and raised our right foot up off balancing them causing them to roll over, we followed them over to mount.

3:Scissor sweep:Same grips and  postition as drill 1.This time out partner went to pass, and placed their right leg at 9:00(Well within our hand grabbing reach). We dropped out collar grip with our right hand, and placed it behind their left ankle,at the same time swinging our left leg out and rotating 90 degrees. We then swung this leg back to the mat cutting down by their right leg,and raised our right arm up off balancing them so they rolled over, coming to mount.

4:Again same grips as drill 1 but this time our partner placed thier leg at 7:00 again, and came up off their knees.Letting go of our right hand in their collar, and reaching underneath, we grabbed their right gi pants at the ankle. We then pulled this towards us off balancing them or sitting them back on their butt locking them down again so we could regroup.

5:Geoffs sweep:(This is one of Geoff’s favourite sweeps)Same grips as drill 1,and our partner was in our guard sitting on their knees. We let go of their collar with our right hand, and reached around to grab their left gi pants at the ankle.Letting go our legs, we dropped our left leg to the mat,and kicked our right leg under their left armpit. This rolled them over to mount.(Point-We still were gripping their right arm to stop them from posting)

6:We then put it all together with our partner dictating where they place their leg etc.We would react depending on what hey would do.

7:This time our partner would either try and pass, or we would have to sweep using one of the above. If either happened, we would start again.

Thursday the 4th of December Fundamentals

1:Our partner was on their knees and we had our  right hand gripping collar, and our left hand gripping their right sleeve cuff. Our feet were in their hips. They would move forward and back, left to right, and we would have to keep the distance and maintain control.

2:Same drill position as 1.This time our partner would use their left hand to grab our right leg.We maintained the left leg in their hip to keep the distance, and placed our right foot in their left bicep, off balancing them.

3:Again same grips and postion as drill 1 and our partner would move left, right ,forward and backward.Difference this time is they would back away at the last minute. We used our left hand to post, and jump back to our knees. From here we would jump to our feet.We still had our right hand in their collar,so as we jumped to our feet we would pull this down,Aiming to face plant them to the mat.

4.We put this all together. Our partner would move forward back left and right, stand up,sit down.We could choose all of the above to go with depending on what our partner would do.

5:Here we learned the Sweep.Same grips and postion as drill 1.We let our left leg go dead, and dropped it to the mat.Our right leg would come up and lick under their left armpit. As we did this we would pull them forward, and roll onto our left should. This caused them to roll over, and we ended up on mount.(When we pulled them forward we would use our whole body not just our arms, and stretch back)

6:Triangle.Here we had the same postion as drll 2(Grips and our left foot in their right hip and our right foot in their left bicep)Using our right foot,we would take it from their bicep, and cut it across the back of their neck.Pull their right arm right across to our right side, then swing our left leg over our right leg so that the back of our left knee was over our right ankle. We would squeeze it all down for th tap(If they didn’t tap we would pull their head down placing more pressure on the move)

7:Putting it all together, our partner would give us resistance but not be a dick about it.We would have the choice of backing away,or going for the sweep, or triangling them, depending on what mvoes our partner would do.For example if they place their left hand on our right leg,we would put our right foot in their bicep, then go for the triangle.

Sunday the 30th of November Fundamentals

1:Tonight we started off being in side control, with both our partners arms across our body(elbows on the mat).We would bump up,swing our right leg under and through, using this leg as a pivot we would come around 90 degrees, place them in guard.

2:Same postion again but this time our partner would have their right hand blocking our right hip,and the left hand cupping our left shoulder. We would buck and bridge to get our left hand under their right armpit(Underhook).Once we had the underhook we would hip away to the left until their was enought space to turn and go to our knees and on all fours(remember that the left shoulder stays in the same place, and we move our body away)

3:This drill we were on all fours and our partner was sprawled on us(facing North/South),and their arms wrapped aound our stomach. We would capture their left arm with our right arm, move our right arm so that it was in the centre of their stomach, and come up onto our left foot(Placing it as far away as possible-preferable out at 7:00).We then kicked our right leg out as far as possible(Geoff calls this “Jumping out the window”).This caused our parther to drop to the mat.We then came around to the left to take their back.

4A:Here we were on our back with our elbows in, and our partner had North/South position. We used our legs and swung them around to the left then the right then the left.We then did 2 things simultaneously(1)pushed our forearms up to create space(2)used our legs like a clorkscrew and swung them around which in turn swung our whole body around. We ended up on all fours under them.4B:Exactly the same starting postion but this time we placed both arms out to our left  creating space that way. When it came time to do the corkscrew we were already half way out.

5:Here we were in our partners side control.Blocking their left hip with our right forearm they would start to come around to North/South.As they did this we would take a free ride around by straightening our right arm.Using their momentum we would roll over and end up on all fours underneath. They wrapped their arms around our stomach, and we would grab the right arm and go into drill 2.
