Thursday The 29th of January Fundamentals
1:Tonight we started with our partner on our hooks, andwe were lying flat on our backs. We would sit up and get double under hooks, and lay back down again pulling our partner down with us.We then rolled back up again, and let them go back to sitting on our hooks in the orginal position,Rpeating the drill over and over
2:Same starting postion again as drill 1,but this time when we came up the right hand went for the underhook, and the left hand went for the overhook. This time when we pulled them back down, we would roll over our left shoulder(or the shoulder that we had the over hook on)kick up our right hook, and roll them over for the sweep.
3:Again we went through drill 1 with our grips, and kept our arms in close, and tucking our head under their chin. When we pulled them back down,we would roll them to the left and right, like a ball.
3b:Same setup again as drill 3,except this time we would trap their right arm with our left arm behind the left side of our neck.We then rolled back down to the left and lifted our right hook up sweeping them over.We then tired this sweep on the right hand side.
4:We were lying flat on our back, grabbing both of their sleeves. Our partner was on our hooks. They would lift the right leg up,so we would raise our left foot to go with it.They would then bring down this hook and raise the right hook up,so we would follow with the right foot. They would bring this down again, and repeat it over and voer form left to right.
5:Same position again as drill 4 ,but this time our partner would stand up.We took our left foot out from the hook and placed it in their hip.Whe then did the same for the right. We then put the left foot in their bicep, then followed with the right. Then placed the left foot back in the hip, followed by the right.Taking the left foot off the hip again and placing it behind their right knee for the hook, folloed by the right.Again taking the left foot out from the hook to the hip, followed by the right, repeating this over an over.If we got confident with this we tried 1 foot in the bicep, then 1 foot in the hip, then switching it all around.
6:Rollover shoulder drill:Here we kneeled on the mat,and would turn our head to the left and roll over our right shoulder. We then scooted back to our knee’s,and would tilt our head to the right and roll over to the left shoulder, repeating again and again.
7:(Front Sweep)Starting with our partner standing and our feet in their hips, and gripping their sleeves with both hands. They would lean forward. We would slightly bend our knees, and lift them up pulling them forward,so they were loaded onto our legs.We then tilted our head to one side and would lower them down slightly so(as Geoff says) we could check their ear for wax.In this case I’ll use our right side as an example. We then lowered them further, and rolled them over further, rolling over our right shoulder all the way until they were flat on their back and we were on mount, stretching our knees under their arms.Note Our partner has to work with us and roll over their shoulder also.
8:(Backsweep) again same setup as drill 7 but instead of coming forward our partner would posture back.We took our feet our from their hips, and pulled our knees in together so they came in across their stomach,at the same time letting go of their sleeves and grabbing their ankles. With our knees we then pushed them back, and pulled their ankles towards us,causing them to fall back.We then grabbed their right sleeve with our left hand, posted up on our right hand, and tucked our right leg under their left leg. With a series of little posts now we used our right hand to come around to the right side until we ended up on mount.
Sunday the 25th of January Fundamentals
1:Tonight we started out with our feet in our partners hips, and our right hand in their collar high as we can at the back of their neck for better control. Our left hand was latched onto their right wrist(Easier for a sweep as it makes it more difficult for them to post). They would move left and right,up and down and sometimes standing up.Our objective would be to maintain distance and contol with using our grips and feet.
2:Same grips as drill 1 but this time our partner was a munter, and instead of coming forward they would back away.We came sat on our left butt cheek and posted with our left hand(letting go of their right cuff). We swung our legs backward,at the same time pulling down on their collar as if to face plant them on the mat. They would end up on all 4’s,and we would end up sitting on our knees.
2(b) Exactly the same as drill 2 but they would push down on our right leg as if they were trying to pass.We did exactly the same form there as drill 2(post,swing back, and pull on the collar)
3:This time we were sprawled in the North/South position, and our partner was on their hands and knees. We used our right arm,and passed it through between their arms, and grabbed their right tricep with our right hand, and pulled it to our right as far as we could. From here we brought our left arm up so that we could grab the bicep with our right hand creating alot of pressure and space on the left hand side.We then used this space to dive under, and rolled our partner over our head so we both ended up on our backs. We then walked around to the left bringing on the choke.
4:We then started in drill 1 position. Then went to drill 2, then onto drill 3.
5:We started in Drill 3 position, but this time instead of being able to pull their right arm across they pull it back to their knee, stopping us from being able to continue the dive under. We Stepped up with our left leg, then right, sat back down, and swung our legs over to bring them into guard, stretching them back with our legs. This is whats know as a Guillotine
6:We then put drill 1,then 2, then 5 together.
7:We have gone for drill 2,and our partner has a few clues and has pulled their elbow right back in defence. We brought our right hand over to their left side ribs.Placed our left hand on their right tricep, stepped up with our left leg,and dropped it down flat to the mat.We then kicked our right leg over, and rolled them over to mount.
8: We then started in drill postion 1,and our partner worked with us,and dicated which of the drills above we went for
Thursday the 22nd of January Fundamentals
3:Same grips again as drill 2,but this time our partner would reach around with their left hand under our right leg as if they wanted to pin it to the mat to pass our guard. We came up onto our left butt cheek, changed our angle, and pull them forward, kicked the right leg in a semi circle under their armpit following them over for the sweep and over to mount.
4:Same grips again. Our partner would dictate what we did.If they pushed the leg down we would go to our knees. If they moved back we would go to our knees. If they tried to pass we would go for the sweep.
4(b)Same grips but our partner would try and pass our guard,or we would have to use the options above.
5:Same grips .We would take our feet off their hips, kick our right leg over their back changing our angle 45 degrees.Because we still had their right arm,we pulled this into the centre of our chest, and swung the left leg over so that our calf was cutting over the back of their neck.We squeezed our knees together, welded ther little finger to the centre of our chest, and bridged up for the armbar.
Sunday the 18th of January Fundamentals
1:Tonight we started out with our feet in our partners hips, and our right hand in their collar high as we can at the back of their neck for better control. Our left hand was latched onto their right wrist(Easier for a sweep as it makes it more difficult for them to post). They would move left and right,up and down and sometimes standing up.Our objective would be to maintain distance and contol with using our grips and feet.
2:Here we had the same grips as drill 1 and our partner would do the same moving left to right up and down.We would wait until they were sitting back down again and pushing forward, then we would kick our right shin into their left armpit, then pull them forward. They would fall onto their right side, and we would follow them over to mount.
2b:Here we would use timing to do drill 2.They would up and dwon left and right forward and backward. As soon as they were pushing forward we would kick the shin in the armpit and sweep them over.Another varition would be to place our left foot in front of their right knee and to kick that back.
3:We had the same grips as drill 2 again. This time they stood up.we flicked our legs away from their hips and pulled them forward ,and pull their right arm over to the right side of our body,so they ended up on all fours, and we we to the right side of them.We then reached over and latched our left hand to their left lat(our chest was stopping them from pulling their right arm out and away). As they went to centre up we rolled them over to our left side so they ended up on their back, and we ended up on our knees in side control.
4:Again we had the same grips as drill 1 but this time they would come up onto their left leg at about the 8:00 position. We would take our right leg out of their hip and place it under their left knee(Toes point torwards the us so we had that hook secured). We then pulled them forward, lifted up our right leg,and swept them over.
5:Same grips again as drill 4,and we still had the hook in their left leg as they had psoted on their left leg again to the 8:00 position(we also had our left foot hooked behind their right knee). The difference this time was instead of pulling them forward,we grabbed their right arm and dragged it to the right side of our body, and came up and grabbed their left lat with our left hand.(also locking our chest against their right arm to stop them from pulling it away or posting). From here we did 3 things simultaneously(a) rolled back onto out left shoulder (b)kicked our right leg up (c)kicked our left leg away from us.This rolled them over for the sweep.
Geoff also made mention that we rely on our partner to participate so if we get into the position with feet in hips and grips:
1:They centre up we sweep them
2:If we pull them forward and they don’t move we swing our left leg over and take the back.
3:If we go for drill 5 and go for the sweep we can also catch their right arm as we go over with our left elbow and left knee, swing around to our knees, and grab their collar with our right arm, then bring our left hand into the opposite side of their collar by their neck(thumb in deep) and blade this arm down so the forearm goes down across their neck for the choke.
Thursday the 15th of January Fundamentals
1:Tonight we started off on mount position. Our partner had both forearms up in the defending their neck.We place both our hands on thier right forearm, and lock our arms straight.Using our body weight and gravity,we push the forearm down and ourward in an L shape, and shaved a few inches off their right ear with our right elbow.Placing all our weight on this elbow we brought our left hand under their arm,and latched onto our right forearm. We then pulled the arm down and up(Geoff used the analogy of a plane taking off at Auckland airport, long and up, not Wellington airport which is usually straight up)We did this slowly and waited for the tap.
2:Same postion again as drill 1 but this time as we pushed their right forearm down in the L shape, they would turn on their right side and grab their right hand with their left hand.We swung our right knee around to the top of their head so we ended up in sidemount. We then did 3 things simultaneously (a) placed all our weight on their ribs with our left butt cheek (b) Stretched our left leg out (c) grabbed their left arm with our right hand.We placed our right leg over their head and squeezed our knees together securing their arm.Welded their little finger to our chest and slowly sat back for the armbar.
3:This drill we went through all of drill 2 but at the last second when we lay back for the armbar ,our partner used their right hand to push our right leg off their head.We placed our left leg on their right arm and stretched it out. They would start to come up and try to sit up partially but not quite to their knees.Just before this happened,we placed our left leg in between their head and right arm.As they spun around, we ended up in this position(Our left leg over their head at the back of the knee, and we still had their left arm trapped). We swung our right leg over our left so that the right back ouf our knee was over our left ankle. We grabbed their left arm and placed it over to the left side of our body and squeezed. This is known as the Triangle.note if their is to much space or you can’t quite get the back of your knee over your ankle, you can always grab your ankle(not Foot) with your hand and pull it down.also to get this they usually have to be slouched forward.Even if we can’t quite lock on the Triangle we can always cross our feet and squeeze casuing discomfort, and then dropping our legs to guard position.
4:Here we went through all of drill 3 and went to lock on the triangle but instead of being slouched forwards, they sat right back.Their knees ended up being under our butt. Here we put our hands to the mat as if we we going for a partial handstand and used this as leveredge to push our legs back* and to the right hand side taking our partner to a 45 degree angle(Not over the back of their feet). They ended up on their back flat on the mat again. We still had the left arm secured so we squeezed our knees together, and welded their little finger to our chest and slowly lay back for the armber.
* Geoff explaind this movement as bascially lying on your back and using your hands and legs as if you were trying to use both of these to jump to your feet.
Sunday the 11th of January 2009 Fundamentals
Welcome back everyone
1:Tonight we started off being in side control, with both our partners arms across our body(elbows on the mat).We would bump up,swing our right leg under and through, using this leg as a pivot we would come around 90 degrees, place them in guard.
2:Same postion again but this time our partner would have their right hand blocking our right hip,and the left hand cupping our left shoulder(This is our biggest issue with the pinning of this shoulder). We would buck and bridge to get our left hand under their right armpit(Underhook).Once we had the underhook we would hip away to the left until their was enought space to turn and go to our knees and on all fours(remember that the left shoulder stays in the same place, and we move our body away)
3:Here we started off in side control, and our partner was going for the far armbar. They would cup our left shoulder with their right arm and place their left hand by our left ear. They then would spike our ribs with their right elbow, causing us to come up onto our side. They then spun around and placed their left foot into the small of our back, sat into the space created by their left ear, squeezed their kness together, and welded our little finger to thier chest and lay back for the tap.
4:Here is the escape to drill 3:As our partner had setup the spike and started coming around,we would place our right hand inside their right inner thigh.Using this momentum when they would come around to sit in the space provided,we used our left hand to push their right leg off our head, and would use our legs to run the opposite direction(to the right).Just a quick note.If our right arm wont reach their right inner thigh we can use the left hand.and grab our left bicep with our right hand.
5:We have side control and have turned to our right hand side,so that our right shoulder is creating pressue in the centre of their chest.Using our right hand we would pass it under their right arm and grab their collar.Placing our left thumb in the opposite side of their collar(their left side) as deep as we could.Locking our left arm solid so that it was straight we then turned our body back flat onto our stomach,we would use this leveredge to blade the wrist across their neck for the choke.
5b:This time our partner was protecting their neck with both arms up so that we could go for the choke in drill 5.We came up onto the balls of our feet and walked around to North/South.Once here we pushed off their right arm with our left hand, and came back around again to use our right arm to grab the collar underneath and go through drill 5.
Geoff also talked about the importance of not being stuck on our back at any cost.As soon as we found ourselves on our back we should be hipping to the side to get off our back, and this should be our focus whenever we find ourselves getting stuck.
