Thursday the 27th of Febuary Fundamentals
Tonight Geoff started by talking about a” Willingness to follow”
1:Tonight we started with our partner being on all four’s and we Side back control. We also had our left hand under their left armpit, and our right arm over and in between their arms. Both our hands were clasped together. As a defense our partner would latched onto our left arm and pull their left arm back to secure our arm,and roll over.We would follow them over.If they rolled back we would go with them.If they bridged and put their weight on us, we would take their back by swinging our left leg under them, and get the hooks with both feet.
2:Again our partner is on their knees again and we have side back mount, with the under over grips. This time we took their back, and went for the (1)Rear Naked Choke (We have our right arm around their neck and and grabbed our left shoulder or as close as we could possible get.We then raised our right arm right up(Being careful not to put it to far forward so our partner could grab it),and blade down(Palm flat) in between our face and the back of our partners head.We would then puff out our chest and squeeze tight until they tapped.(2)A variation of the Rear Naked choke(We had our right hand under their neck, and placed it on their left shoulder. We then brought our left bicep in and grabbed it with our right hand, and bladed the left hand down onto the back of their neck, until they tapped.
3:We put drill 1 and 2 together. Our partner rolled us over, and bridged up.We got the hooks and went for the Rear Naked or the variation of the Rear Naked Choke.
4:Drill 1 postition again but instead of them rolling us over, or taking their back, we slapped on the Rear Naked or the Variation from side back control.
5:This is the one from Tony:Our partner is turtles up on all fours, and has their left elbow to their knee touching. We had Side back mount. We brought our left hip to touch their right hip, straightened our left arm,and brought it to the inside of their left knee.We then pushed this knee out a few inches(enough to get out foot through the space)We then swung our left leg over, and placed our left foot in the hole we created, and placed our right leg along side their right leg. With our right hand now we placed it in front of their neck, and grabbed the left side of their lapel(thumb up,so our forearm was blading across their neck). With the left hand we placed it under their armpit. We pulled them over and sat on our left butt cheek, and our left hand grabbed the right side of their Lapel. We pulled that side down to choke our partner.
Sunday the 22nd of Febuary Fundamentals
1:Tonight we started off being in side control, with both our partners arms across our body(elbows on the mat).We would bump up,swing our right leg under and through, using this leg as a pivot we would come around 90 degrees, place them in guard.
2:Same postion again but this time our partner would have their right hand blocking our right hip,and the left hand cupping our left shoulder(This is our biggest issue with the pinning of this shoulder). We would buck and bridge to get our left hand under their right armpit(Underhook).Once we had the underhook we would hip away to the left until their was enought space to turn and go to our knees and on all fours(remember that the left shoulder stays in the same place, and we move our body away)
3:Again our partner has us in side control, and has their right by our right hip and their left hand on the same side under our head.We then did what Geoff calls the sidewinder drill by moving (1)our feet first 2 inches to the left,(2) then moved our butt 2 inches,(3)then our head 2 inches to the left.We kept doing this in order(feet, butt, head) until we had enough space to either swing our right leg through to put them in guard, or flick our legs over to end up on our stomach, and come up on all fours and go deep under their stomach, to avoid getting choked.
4:Geoff explained that the main way to side contol is to pass the guard,so our partner simulated passing our guard. We we on our right hip and had our left leg across their stomach. We also had our left hand inside our inner thigh, and our right hand protecting our head.As they came around to pass we used our left hand to get the underhook(also avoided letting them put their weight on us).We then ducked dwon towards our feet, enabling us to escape, and swing the left leg over to take their back.
5:Rear Naked Choke:Here are partner is sitting on their knees facing forward and we are kneeling behind them.We swung our right arm around their neck and and grabbed our left shoulder or as close as we could possible get.We then raised our right arm right up(Being careful not to put it to far forward so our partner could grab it),and blade down(Palm flat) in between our face and the back of our partners head.We would then puff out our chest and squeeze tight until they tapped.
6:We put drill 5 and 6 together, so our partner passed our guard, we took the back, and got out hooks in, grabbed their left forearm with our left hand, pull them forward, and brung the right hand under their neck to apply the Read Naked choke.
Thursday the 19th of Feburary Fundamentals
4:This time we had side control resting on their forearms. We switched our base to capture their right arm with our left arm,and got as high as we could underneath their right armpit. We then Switch our base back to side control and cupped their left shoulder.
5:Here we have switched base side control but are facing our partners feet. They used their forearms against our back to try and block us.We reached under and grabbed their Gi pants under the butt, and walked around to North/South crushing their forearms down.
5B:Same setup as drill 5 but our partner goes to bridge up.As they did this we swung our right leg over them to get mount position.

Sunday the 15th of Febuary Fundermentals
1:Figure 4 from Mount:Here we are sitting on mount, and our partner has both arms locked on their chest by their face,as if they were going to cover their face from us punching them.We grabbed one forearm(in this case the right hand side),with both hands, and locked our arms together straight, and used our body weight to push their arm down to the mat,so their arm was locked at a 90 degree angle. We then brought down our right elbow, and shave a couple of inches off their ear(as Geoff likes to say) and brought our left arm underneath ,and locked our wrists. We then slowly dragged their arm down and up for the Tap.
2:Figure 4 from Guard. We have our partner is our guard ,and they make the mistake of putting their hands on the mat.We grab their left wrist with our right hand(Keeping it close to our body as possible)We then open our legs sit up and grab our right wrist with our left hand, and roll back.We then hip out to the right 90 degrees, and place our right leg over their back, and stretch it out slightly.Make sure that the elbow is in the middle of your chest, and at a 90 dgree angle, and slightly rotate your hips so they are not flat on the mat,and rotate their arm up for the Tap.
3:Same setup as drill 2 (Partner in guard and securing their left hand with our right) but this time instead of coming up and reaching over to grab their left arm, we kicked the back of it with our right knee, and spun around 90 degrees, and grabbed our right wrist with our left left hand.We ended up in exactly the same position as drill 2,so all we had to do was rotate their arm up for the Tap.
4:Fig 4 from side control:This time we had side control, and secured our partners left hand.We grabbed their left wrist with our right hand, grabbed our right wrist with our left hand under their arm(making sure it was 90 degrees),used our left knee to anchor their face down, and slowly rotated their elbow up for the tap.
5:Same setup as drill 2 again but this time instead of us getting to the postion of swinging around 90 degrees, our partner kills our right leg,and is starting to pass our guard. We quickly pushed their left hand into their left hip and spun around 270 degrees so we were right underneath them and coming out the other side. This caused them to roll over us and end up on their back, and we ended up in side control with their arm secured, and went straight into drill 4
Thursday the 12th of Febuary Fundamentals
1:Tonight we started off being in side control, with both our partners arms across our body(elbows on the mat).We would bump up,swing our right leg under and through, using this leg as a pivot we would come around 90 degrees, place them in guard.
2:Here we started being in our partners guard.our number 1 priority is to get away from their legs and to stop them sitting up.We placed both hands of their chest, grabbing the Gi, and stuck our right knee in the centre of their spine. We then placed the left leg out of reach from our partner at about a 7:00 position. From here we then did 2 things simultaneously (1) popped their right leg by placing our left hand on their right knee and pushing down (2) sucked our right elbow back to our lat(to avoid a triangle if our partner has a few clues). We grabbed their right leg and placed it on our left shoulder and grabbed their lapel with our left hand. Our aim now was to put the left knee into their nose, creating alot of pressure on our partner and making it pretty uncomfortable. This eanbled us to walk around to the left and up back in side control.
3:We then put drill 1 and 2 together in a circuit known as the “Basic Guard Pass”
4:Here we in in drill 2 postion again stuck in our partners guard. We grabbed our partners hips or belt and nailed their butt to the floor, and brought our elbows in close to protect them.We grabbed their Gi pants at the knees to control the legs and walked backwards until their legs popped open, and brought our right knee up,and were still sitting on our left leg.Pushing their right leg down to the mat with our left hand,we took the right knee over their left leg pinning it down, and used our left leg as an outrigger at about 7:00 again.Letting go of their gi pants with our right hand, and sliding our right hip forward we ended up sliding forward and ending up in switched base side control. From here we turned back to full short based side control. This drill is known as the “Basic knee through Guard pass”
Sunday the 8th of January Fundamentals
1:We had our right hand in their collar and feet in their hips, and gripping thier right sleeve with our left hand.Instead of our partner coming forward they would back away.We came sat on our left butt cheek and posted with our left hand(letting go of their right cuff). We swung our legs backward,at the same time pulling down on their collar as if to face plant them on the mat. They would end up on all 4’s,and we would end up sitting on our knees. Then we sprawled with our chest on their head.1(b) if they wrapped their left hand under our right leg (as if they wanted to pin it to the mat or to pass our guard). We came up onto our left butt cheek, changed our angle, and pull them forward, kicked the right leg in a semi circle under their armpit following them over for the sweep and over to mount.Note you have to break the grip with your right leg first then kick on a 45 degree angle, and our left leg has to drop to the mat or.1(C)our partner stands up putting their right leg forward. We let go of their right sleeve with our left hand and grab their right ankle. From here we took our right foot away from their hip,and placed it behind their left knee.We then did 3 things simultaneously (1) pushed our left foot that was still in their right hip back (2) pulled our left hand towards us as we had their right ankle (3) pulled our right foot towards us.The end result would be sweeping them back onto their butt. When they landed we centered ourselves onto their right leg below the knee, and squeezed our knees together maintaining control of their leg.
2:We started in drill 1 position again but we lose control and our partner stands up putting their right leg forward.
3:This drill we started off in Hooks, and we had both under hooks at the elbows for control incase they moved. We kept the right underhook, and placed our left arm over thier right arm for the overhook. We kept our head down, and rolled back over our left shoulder. As we rolled back we kick the right hook up and over, and we kciked our left leg to the side.We rolled thm over for the sweep, and ended up on our knees in side control.
4:Again we had our hooks in and our partner was kneeling down. Before we even came up to get out underhooks, our partner would stand up.If he moved,we would go with them still controlling them with our hooks. We then scooted in on our butt, and grabbed the back of their feet with our hands. We squeezed our knees together and pushed them back while pulling their feet towards us.This caused them to fall back.We then jumped back to our knees, controlling their legs still
5:We started in drill 1 position. Our partner would either have to pass our guard, or we would have to sweep them usning 1 of the above sweeps.
Thursday the 5th of Febuary Fundamentals
1:Tonight we started out with our feet in our partners hips, and our right hand in their collar high as we can at the back of their neck for better control. Our left hand was latched onto their right wrist(Easier for a sweep as it makes it more difficult for them to post). They would move left and right,up and down and sometimes standing up.Our objective would be to maintain distance and contol with using our grips and feet.
2:Same grips as drill 1 but this time our partner was a munter, and instead of coming forward they would back away.We came sat on our left butt cheek and posted with our left hand(letting go of their right cuff). We swung our legs backward,at the same time pulling down on their collar as if to face plant them on the mat. They would end up on all 4’s,and we would end up sitting on our knees.
2b:This time we would run through drill 2 again but when we went to our knees we would bring our right in between their arms, and our left arm underneath their right armpit, and clasp our hands together for a strong grip controlling them so even if they move we are in control.Note(keep their head lower than yours)
3:Same grips again as drill 1,but this time our partner would reach around with their left hand under our right leg as if they wanted to pin it to the mat or to pass our guard. We came up onto our left butt cheek, changed our angle, and pull them forward, kicked the right leg in a semi circle under their armpit following them over for the sweep and over to mount.Note you have to break the grip with your right leg first then kick on a 45 degree angle, and our left leg has to drop to the mat.
4:We started in drill 1 position again but we lose control and our partner stands up putting their right leg forward.
5:Exact same setup as drill 4 but this time our partner would put their left foot forward instead of their right. We let go of their collar with our left hand and grabbed their left ankle. We then had the choice of taking our left foot from their right hip and placing it behind their right knee and sweeping them,or keeping the left foot in their right hip as in drill 4 ,and rolling onto our right butt cheek slightly and swinging our right calf under their right ankle. We then pulled their left leg towards us,and pushed our left foot back, ending up sitting on their left leg now.
6:We then put drill 4 and 5 together but our partner dictated what we did by deciding what leg they would put forward. We would act accordingly.
Sunday the 1st of Febuary Fundamentals
1:Tonight we started out in side control, and our partner was flat on their back with their arms up in full defense, sothat we were resting on their forerms with our chest. We were up on the balls of our feet, blocking their right hip wiht our right hand, and cupping their left shoulder with our right and.We then slowly walked around to our left keeping our hips low.Whe we got around to the North/South position we brought our knees in so our legs were either side of their face, and our arms were tucked in tight on both sides of their ribs.Frm here we walked around to the left again,so that we were now on the opposite side of our starting position. This time our left hand was blocking their left hip,and our right hand was cupping their right shoulder.Switching base now we ended up,with our right lat over their face, our right leg flat down their left side, and our left leg away 90 degrees(Geoff refers to it as the Watching TV position). From here we Swung our left leg over their body, ended up on mount. We then put our right elbow down by the side of their right ear,and reversed the position off mount again,so we ended up in the watch TV postition again, then walked around to North/South brought our knees in again to either side of ther head, straightened our legs out again walking around to the right side(basically reversing what we had done) and coming back aorund to our orginaly starting position.
2:Same drill as 1 again but this time our partner gave us a little bit of resistance bridging, and moving from left to right but not totally spazing out. When we had completed going around to the left hand side,as they bridged we would swing the leg over to mount.
3:One of the best ways to escape side control is to go for the underhook(placing our left hand under their right armpit, and hipping away until we can flip to our knees, and coming to all 4’s).We started in drill 1 position again and our partner wouild go for the underhook,as if they were trying to escape. As soon as they had their left arm under our right armpit,we would trap this arm with our and bring our same arm down again to block their right hip.We brought our left hand around to the far side, shutting them down.Switching the hips slightly to the left and driving our left shoulder into their face.If they bridged we swung our right leg over for mount.
4:Same drill as 3 again but this time we would go to mount and go for the cuff choke.(This is when we were sprawled on mount and had our left arm under their head, and would bring the right arm in so that we could put our fingers into our right sleeve, and our right hand would end up blading across their throat, little finger first, applying pressure bring on the choke).Geoff went over the 3 counters to this choke(1) before the choke was on,they would weld our left arm to the mat with their head, trap our right leg with their right foot, and bridge and roll us over then posture straight up (2) If there was space they would bring their right arm up and through the right side of their face and our left arm,and circle around our this arm, creating a space so that they couldn’t bring both hands together (3) use their right hand and bring it over to block our right arm at the elbow,by forming a V with their thumb and index finger once again stopping us from bringing our hands together..
5:We then went back to the starting position in drill 1,and had 3 choices of what move to go for(1) Half guard (2) Full guard (3) or onto our knees,if we were quick enough to get the underhook.
Geoff lastly explained that when we had this move to be prepared to move with it as our partner won’t be staying still most of the time, and finally being about control and shutting our partner down.
