Sunday the 22nd of March Fundamentals

1:Tonight we started off being in side control, with both our partners arms across our body(elbows on the mat).We would bump up,swing our right leg under and through, using this leg as a pivot we would come around 90 degrees, place them in guard.

2:Same postion again but this time our partner would have their right hand blocking our right hip,and the left hand cupping our left shoulder(This is our biggest issue with the pinning of this shoulder). We would buck and bridge to get our left hand under their right armpit(Underhook).Once we had the underhook we would hip away to the left until their was enought space to turn and go to our knees and on all fours(remember that the left shoulder stays in the same place, and we move our body away)

3:Again they have side control, and are blocking our right hip.We jammed our right forearm into their left hip,and reached over with our left hand to grabbed their belt. From here we moved our legs as close to them as possible, bridged up to trick our partner into thinking we were going to bridge them to the left,so their reaction was to come forward(which is what we wanted). We used this momentum to roll them over our left shoulder.

4:Same setup as drill 3 but our partner posted their right leg up so as we couldn’t roll them.We just created distance between us and backed away to our knees.

Thursday the 26th of March Fundamentals

1:Tonights class we started with our partner on our hooks, and we were lying on our backs.(a)We came up and got the double overhooks, pulled our partner off their base, and lay on our backs again, then came up and let them go so they were sitting on our hooks again, and lay on our backs again(b)again came up and got the double underhooks, pulled them of their base and lay back down again, then came up,let them go so they were sitting on our hooks again, and lay on our backs(c)came up again and got the right arm underhook and the left arm overhook, pulled them off their base and lay back down again, then came up so they were sitting on our hooks again, and lay back down(d)came up and got the left arm underhook and the right arm overhook, and pulled them off their base, and lay back down again, repeating the drill over and over.Note our partner would post their hands down on the mat to avoid being face planted.

2:We were in our partners guard and postured back sitting on our knees. We grabbed their gi pants at the hips and pinned them down.Bringing our elbows in we came up of our knees and shuffled back putting pressure on their legs until they came open. From here we sat on our left leg and brought our right knee up to create space.

3:In this drill we started  form the end position in drill 2(in our partners open guard, sitting on our left leg and right knee was up)We grabbed their right knee with our left hand, and pinned it to the mat.We then stepped over this leg with our left leg being used as an outrigger at a 7:30 position, and our right leg would pin the left leg down to stop our partner from being able to use it.From here we used our right hand to get the underhook, and slid our right hip down to our  partners left hip, then switching base to side control.

4:(Double leg under pass). We started in the postion of being in an open guard again, and we had our right knee up.We placed the knee down, and wrapped our arms around their legs(Getting a monkey grip),and hoisted their butt up so that it was sitting on our lap and their hips were off the ground. We then picked a side(right in this case) and ducked our right shoulder down, and put their left knee into their nose, and walked around to secure side control.

5:Same drill as 4 only this time we couldn’t get the monkey grip because our partner was putting pressure on our left arm.We made a fist with our right hand and placed it by their right hip. Then keeping our hips down we walked all the way round 270 degrees to their right hand side securing side control, and sometimes the crossface with their left arm.Note.The key is to keep the hips down so as not to give any space.

Sunday the 15th of March Fundamentals

Tonight Geoff was away so Hemi and a few of the Blues explained there favourite passes and sweeps:

1:Hemi’s sweep:(This is also Geoff’s favourite sweep). Our partner is in our guard. We grabbed their right hand at the Gi cuff and pulled it over to the right hand side of our body,as if to face plant them(making sure that our chest was blocking their bicep,so they couldn’t pull the arm back) and slightly shifted our body to the left..We let go our our legs and came up from guard, and swung our left arm over to their left lat,or the left side of the belt.We then ducked under them until they were slightly off balance(this could take a few shuffles under),and reached our right hand under and down to grab their left side Gi pants at the ankle. We cresent kicked our right leg up,and rolled over our left shoulder.Note make sure you latch yourself to them as you roll over.

2:Shano( Basic sweep):Here we have our partner in guard and our right hand was in their collar, and left hand was gripping their right Gi cuff.We then opened our legs and hipped onto our left side, and brought our right knee across to their lower stomach. We then used our whole upper body to pull them forward off their base.As they started to fall,we then used our left leg to kicked their right leg under causing them to turn over, following them over to mount.

3:Roblong(Basic Guard pass):We were stuck in our partners guard. We grabbed their Lapel at the upper chest to stop them from posting up,and came up off our heels.Sitting back dwon on our heels again to put pressure on their legs,we then did 2 things simultaneoulsy(1) used our left leg to push down on their right knee and pop it open(2) sucked our right arm back to our hip to avoid being triangled.Once the legs were open we placed their right leg onto our left shoulder.Coming up now onto our feet,we grabbed their lapel at their neck, and pushed their right knee to their nose,or as close as we could get to make it uncomfortable as possible. We then walked around to the right about 90 degrees keeping the pressure on them.Once here we flicked their leg off our shoulder and secured side control.

4:Crazy’s(Double leg under pass). We started in the postion of being in an open guard of our partner so that their legs were open, and we had 1 knee up.We placed the knee down, and wrapped our arms around their legs, and hoisted their but up so that it was sitting on our lap..Just like in Robs Pass we picked a side(left in this case) and ducked our left shoulder down, and put their left knee into their nose, and walked around to secure side control.

5:Adrian’s choke. We had side control, and our partner went for the underhook(coming up onto their side),so we gave them space to be able to do this.We wizzered their arm(left) with our right arm,and brought it under their head and grabbed the collar,so they were trapped and couldn’t get their arm out.We then brought our left hand to the other side collar and put our fingers inside and the thumb outside, and used our weight to bring the arm down blading across their neck for the choke.

Thursday the 12th of March Fundamentals

1:We started out in mount position, and our partner had their elbows in defending their neck. They bucked and bridged, and we kept low and just held the position,by touching our feet together under their knees.(b)They then bridged to the left,so we kept low again, posted our left hand out,and cupped the right hand behind their neck.(c)this time our partner bucked to the right,so we kept low, post the right hand out,and cupped behind the right side of their neck with our left hand.

2:Here we started off in side control with our partner defending by having their forearms up on their chest and defending their neck.We had our left had cupping their  left shoulder, and our right hand blocking their right hip.We were also up on the baclls of our feet driving our weight into them for better control. We kept our hips low,and walked around to North/South posiston(shaving a few inches off their nose with our Gi belt),and brought our knees close into their head.We then walked all the way around to the left hand side, and this time our right hand cupped their right shoulder, and left hand blocked their left hip.We then walked back around to North/South again, repeating the drill.

3:Side control again, but before we blocked their right hip, they turn towards us on their side.We gave them some space, and grabbed their right leg with our right hand, and pushed them onto their back again.

4:We have Side control again, and our partners goes for the underhook, and tried to hip away.We anchored their right knee, and just followed them around, pinning them on their back again, everytime they tried to do this.

5:Side control again, and our left hand was by their left shoulder posting up.With the right elbow, we spiked it into their ribs, and upped and crushed them.We then came around to North/South so that our knees were either side of their head.Using our left hand now we grabbed their left arm at the V of their elbow. We then grabbed their left wrist with our right hand, and brought our left hand under their arm to grab our right wrist. We rotated their arm Anti clockwise for the fig 4.

6:Side control again. We had their left hand on their ribs(to catch their arm) and our right hand blocking their hip. They would go to get the underhook and hip away.As they did this,we caught their left arm with our left hand, and stepped over and knelt on their head, locking on the figure 4 again as in drill 5.

Sunday the 8th of March Fundamentals

1:Tonight we started with our partner on our hooks, and we were lying flat on our backs. We would sit up and get double under hooks, and lay back down again pulling our partner down with us.We then rolled back and shooted our legs forward so our partner would move a few feet down the mat.We then lay back down again and repeated the drill over and over, until we had got all the way down the mat.

2:Same as drill 1 but this time we had a bit of distance between us and our partner,as we came up we would shoot our butt in close to them, shoot our legs toward the back of the class, and then lie back down again, repeating the drill

3:Same starting postion again as drill 1,but this time when we came up the right hand went for the underhook, and the left hand went for the overhook. We shoot our butt in close and pulled them back down, we would roll over our left shoulder(or the shoulder that we had the over hook on)kick up our right hook, and roll them over to side control.

4:Same starting position again as drill 1 with them sitting on our hooks. We grabbed their right sleeve with both hands, and pulled it to the right side of our body(Arm drag). They posted so as not to face plant themselves on the mat.We then placed our left hand across their back to their left Lat,and our chest placed in their right bicep,to stop them from posting. We used our right arm then to grab their left hand, and placed it behind our head(trapping it).We then rolled over our left shoulder, and kicked our right hook up to roll them over to side control.

5:Same setup as drill 4 except when we rolled them over we would trap their right arm between right elbow and right knee.We then swung aroung and put pressure on their right side ribs, and brought our right hand under their right arm,and placed our right hand under their collar(going to switched based side control).Bringing our left hand to the opposite side of their collar (thumb in).Switching back to side control now,we bladed the left forearm straight across their throat for the tap.

6:Same as drill 4 setup, but as we went to trap the left arm, they pulled their right arm our and placed it onto the opposite side of again to use as a post,so we could roll them over.We shot our legs out like in drill 2,got the over/under grips, and rolled them over like drill 3.

Sunday the 1st of March Fundamentals

1:We started out in mount position, and our partner had their elbows in defending their neck. They bucked and bridged, and we kept low and just held the position,by touching our feet together under their knees.(b)They then bridged to the left,so we kept low again, posted our left hand out,and cupped the right hand behind their neck.(c)this time our partner bucked to the right,so we kept low, post the right hand out,and cupped behind the right side of their neck with our left hand.

2:Again same setup as drill 1 ,but this time our partner used both their hands on our chest to push us away.we circled thier right arm with our left hand and placed it on their chest, then placed our right hand on top of our left, pushed up and juped to a squat,so our left foot ended up being by their right ear. From here we stepped over their head with our left  foot, slide down their right arm(or Bat pole as Geoff calls it),grabbed their right arm with both hands, squeezed our knees together, welded their little finger to the centre of our chest, and lay back for the tap.Note(dont grabbed the arm until you have sat down on your butt). This is known as the basic armbar from mount.

3:Again same set up as drill 1,and our partner bucked and bridged. We let them brigde to the left hand side.As soon as they did we swung our left knee up to their right ear.We then gave them more space to get to all fours.Once here we got their back by getting the hooks with our feet.Using our left hand now,we placed it under their left forearm, pushed our feet back, thrusted our hips forward, flattening them our.We then had the option of going for the 2 Rear naked chokes discussed in the previous class.

4:(Tony’s stuff)Drill posisiton 1 again with our partner defending their neck.We placed both hands on their wrists, and leaned forward, placing alot of pressure on their hands. We swung our right leg forward, and over their left arm,and under their head.We then brung our left leg under their left arm.We grabbed their right arm with our left hand and posted on our right hand. From here we placed our left leg over their head, squeezed the kness for the armbar

5:Exactly the same setup as drill 4,to the point of grabbing their arm.We let them roll us over.As soon as they did this we grabbed our right ankle with our left hand, pulled it down,so we could swing the left leg over.Because we still had the arm trapped,we placed it to the opposite side of our body, squeezed their head down, for the Triangle.
