Sunday the 26th of April Fundamentals

1:Tonights class we started with our partner on our hooks, and we were lying on our backs.(a)We came up and got the double overhooks, pulled our partner off their base, and lay on our backs again, then came up and let them go so they were sitting on our hooks again, and lay on our backs again(b)again came up and got the double underhooks, pulled them of their base and lay back down again, then came up,let them go so they were sitting on our hooks again, and lay on our backs(c)came up again and got the right arm underhook and the left arm overhook, pulled them off their base and lay back down again, then came up so they were sitting on our hooks again, and lay back down(d)came up and got the left arm underhook and the right arm overhook, and pulled them off their base, and lay back down again, repeating the drill over and over.Note our partner would post their hands down on the mat to avoid being face planted.

2:Here our partner was on our hooks again. We came up from our back and got the left arm underhook, and the right armoverhook trapping thier right arm to our ribs(staying connected to them). We rolled back onto our left shoulder, kicking our right foot up,and out left leg away from us,causing our partner to roll over onto their back, and we ended up having them in side control.

3:Again we had hooks, and our right hand underhook, but this time our partner grabbed our left leg,or ankle to begin their pass. Our aim was to get their bodyweight coming forward,so we stepped our left leg and placed it outside their left knee, and shifted away to our right slightly creating a space directly in front of our partner. We then pulled them forward, and kicked up our right hook, causing them to roll over onto their back, and ending up in our side control.

4:Same setup as drill 3,but this time our partner came up off their knee onto their right foot.We grabbed their right arm and secured it to ourselves, and switched our right hook and placed it under their right knee, and roll onto our back again kicking up our right foot, taking them over to side control.

5:Hooks again and our partner had grabbed our left ankle again. We grabbed their right gi cuff with both our hands and launched it forward (arm drag)while kicking our left leg out, pulling them to the right hand side of us.Our partner would post their hands out in order to avoid a face plant onto the mat.We placed our left hand under their right lat,and scooted our butt in close, and rolled back kciking the right foot up and the left foot forward, rolling them over for the sweet to side control.

6:Same setup as Drill 5 but when we rolled them over,we would flip our partner in mid air onto their back so they would end up sitting in between our legs, with their back to us(Pig on a spit).

Thursday the 23rd of April Fundamentals

Geoff explained about Tapping early to avoid injury, and tap you partner not the mat

2:This drill we were standing in our partners open guard, and they hand their feet on either side of our hips.We overhooked their right leg with our left arm,and slid it up so our wrist was up under their ankle capturing it.From here we stepped over their leg placing it on the opposite side (their left) and dropped to our right knee.Bringing our right leg in between their legs, we trapped the left leg fully. We rolled over to the right side(face down),and placed our head under their left foot.We then stretched ourselves back slowly for the tap.

3:Again we were in our partners open with their feet on our hips again.Instead of going for the overhook on the right foot, we went for the underhook, and slid our hand up again to their ankle. We then stepped around and placed our left foot by their left hip,and sat on the hip.We then sldie off their hip onto the mat onto our left hand side, placing our head under their foot, and squeezing our knees together for the tap.

4:Our partner had us in half guard this time.We postured up and backed away to create space, pinned their left hand to their hip, stepped our left leg over, and rolled onto the mat onto our left hand side capturing their  right leg, placing our head under and squeezing the knees just like drill 3.

5:Again we were in half guard and our partner had the underhook ready to escape. We stepped the opposite direction this time ,lifting out heel to catch the leg,and sat on their hip, rolled off ot the left side again, placed our head under their foot and squeezed our knees together stretching away for the tap.

6:Same as drill 5 but our partner goes to go out the back, we pre-empted it and went to drill 5.

Sunday the 19th of April Fundamentals

Tonight Gareth ran the class as Geoff was away

1:Tonight we ran through some armbar defences but we ran through the Armbar from Guard first:We had our partner in guard, and grabbed their right arm,and secured it to the centre of our chest by grabbing  their wrist with our right hand, and behind their tricep with our left hand.We then opened our legs and brought up our left foot and placed it in their right hip.Using this leg as a pivot now,we came up off our back, and turned 90 degrees to the right, and placed our right leg over their back at the same time. From here we swung our left leg over and caught the back of their neck with our knee.Welding the thumb to the centre of our chest we bridge up for the Tap.

2:Here we were in our partners guard and they had the first step of the arm bar by securing our arm to the centre of their chest,as they go to swing the leg over we followed them in the same direction 2(b) we went one further and blocked their knee everytime they went to swing it over.We them did a 30 second drill of trying out both combo’s.

3:This time our partner has secured the armbar, but before they can bridge their hips up,we placed our left ear on their left leg by dropping our left shoulder, and brought our left knee to their right ear.We then grabbed our right forearm with our left hand, and brought our left hand through behind their left knee to create space. We then did waht Gareth called starting the Lawnmower, and pulled our right hand free.

4:Again we were in our partners guard, and placed our elbows out and kept their hips flat. Our partner couldn’t really move our get their legs around our elbows.

5:Here our partner has locked on a standard armbar from side control. Before they bridged their hips for the tap we turned our thumb towards our head, gave a bidge up and walked around towards their feet, and right around to the opposite side.5(b) Same drill as 5 bit this time our partner follows us as we walk around. We ended up on the opposite side and lay flat.It ended up in a Stalemate,as our partner couldn’t get the armbar.

6:Same basic armbar again, but our parner only had their leg over our head and not chest. They also didn’t have our arm secure. We grabbed the leg that was over our head with both hands, and rolled over our far shoulder.Note Look towards the shoulder you are going to roll over.

7:Here our partner goes for the far armbar from side control. As they stepped around,we hooked their leg with our (in this case left hand) and followed them around and rolled out.

8:Far armbar again, we trapped their arm with our left arm by pulling it tight into our lat,and lay back dowm flat. From here we grabbed their near leg and pushed it out towards our feet, causing them to roll over and we ended up with them in side control.

9:Far armbar again,as they go to step around we came up and put our left shoulder into their thigh, grabbed their left ankle, and stepped around and up while pulling the leg.(Like a single leg takedown). Our partner ended up on the ground.

Thursday the 16th of April Fundamentals

2:Here we were standing and our partner was facing us and had their hands on our shoulders( an Arms lenght apart). We caught their left hand by placing out right ear towards our right shoulder. We then placed our right hand just above their elbow(so that the palm was facing out partner), and clasped out palms together. We then twisted and tweeked their arm down slowly for the tap.

3:Here we had side control and the underhook on our partner. They had their underhook hand grabbing the back of our Gi.We sat back and postured up sitting on our heels while catching their hand between our ear and shoulder..We then jumped up onto our feet so, our right shin was in their stomach, and our left shin was in their face.We put our palms on their elbow again and teeeked it for the tap.

4:Side control again and we had the underhook. We went for the fig 4 but our partner straightened their arm out.We captured the arm with our left hand, cammando walked across the other side of them to put our chest on the other side, placed our left shin in their throat, then brought our right foot across so our knee was on the opposite side.We then felt for the elbow and push it slowly up towards our stomach, for the Tap.

5:Here we had Guard on our partner and they made the mistake of putting their right hand on the mat. With our right hand snuck it in behind their right armpit to capture their arm.We placed thier hand between our left shoulder and ear.We hipped out to the left a little to make space, placed both hands just behind the elbow, and twweked it slowly for the tap.

6:Same setup as drill 5.This time our partner pulled their arm back before we could grab it so we grabbed their right hand at the Gi cuff and pulled it over to the right hand side of our body,as if to face plant them(making sure that our chest was blocking their bicep,so they couldn’t pull the arm back) and slightly shifted our body to the left..We let go our our legs and came up from guard, and swung our left arm over to their left lat,or the left side of the belt.We then ducked under them until they were slightly off balance(this could take a few shuffles under),and reached our right hand under and down to grab their left side Gi pants at the ankle. We cresent kicked our right leg up,and rolled over our left shoulder.Note make sure you latch yourself to them as you roll over. This is one of Geoff’s favourite sweeps

Sunday the 12th of April Fundamentals

1:Tonight our partner had taken our back, and they were on thier back and they went to choke us.We kept our jaw down tight to our chest, and had both our hands on the top of our head to precent them form getting their arms around us.We then picked a side and put pressure on the same side leg. With a series of little bumps, we then went sideways and pinned their leg with our butt.Onde we were sitting on the mat,we then turned towards them.

2:Same setup again as drill 1 but this time we grabbed their arm that was around our neck, and pulled it down,at the same time as pulling ourselves down to their feet.Once we were here we rolled into their guard.

3:Again same setup as drill 1 but our partner had their right leg wrapped around our lower stomach, and their left leg over their right ankle(as if triangling us).We leaned to the left hand side, and pushed down on their right knee creating pressure, until they tapped.

4:Here we had our partner in side control, and they had their forearms up defending their neck.We switched base and placed our left hand under their right arm,and grabbed their  right side collar, and put out left thumb in the opposite collar. We then switched base and brought our left forearm over their neck for the choke.

5:Side control again, and our partner has the underhook, with their shoulders coming up off the ground. We captured this arm,and ran around to the opposite side, flattening them onto their back again by putting our elbow behind their ribs, and our chin on our hand, stopping them from rolling away

6:The Roll away drill:Here we had side control, and the underhook. We placed our elbow(underhook arm) in front of their ribs, and they would roll away.We then did the same move but placed our elbow behing their back(behind their ribs),and leant back. Our partner would try and escape.Geoff was explaining about having the elbow at their back to control them.

7:We had side control, and our partner was defending by having their forearms in tight for defense. We placed our forearm under right by parallel to their left bicep(catching underneath it).We then dropped our hips down, and walked around to North/South catching the arm.We then grabbed their left wrist with our right hand, and sat on their head for control. From here we stepped our left foot into the small of their back, and welded their left elbow to our chest, slowly rotating the arm to the left for the armbar.

7b:(Step over armbar variation)Same setup as dill 7 but when we secured their arm at North/South we sat down to the left of their head, swapped to our right arm with their left arm, grabbed their left leg with our left hand, and placed our right leg over their head.Welding their arm to our chest and slowly lying back for the armbar

Thursday the 9th of April Fundamentals

1:Tonight we started out standing, with our partner facing us.We had our right hand clamping the back of their neck, pulling it down, our head pushing into the right side of their jaw,and our left hand pushing their right hand into their right hip.We quickly let go of their neck with our right hand, and grabbed the back of their right elbow. From here we pulled it towards us(arm dragged) and stepped around,so we ended up behind them, taking their back, and claping both arms around them to secure the position.

2:Here we were on our knees going head to head.We brought our head to one side and drove it into the side of our partners face, then came around to the side, then to take the back.

3:Head to head again. We grabbed their right collar side with our right hand, and their right sleeve with our left hand.We stepped our right leg up so it was outside their right knee.We then pushed them over their right leg 90 degrees flat on their back to knee ride.We still had the grips,so we stepped over their head with our left leg,sat down, squeezed our knees together, welded their little finger to our chest, and lay back down for the armbar.

4:Same setup again as drill 3,but this time when we stepped up onto our right leg,we lay back down onto our backs 90 degrees, and placed our right shin into the centre of their chest, and swung our left leg over their head so the back of our knee was over their neck.We then squeezed our knees together and bridged our hips up for the armbar.

5:Our partner was on our hooks. We grabbed their right sleeve or wrist with both hands, laucned oursleves backward, pulling them as hard as we could forward off their base, using all our body weight.

6:Same setup as drill 5 but this time our partner grabbed our ankle. We did exactly the same as drill 5 by grabbing their wrist or gi cuff with both hands.Simultaneously we launch them forward, and kicked out this same leg  pulling them forward off their base.We then took their back.

2:

Sunday the 5th of April Fundamentals

1:Tonight we started with the mount drill. We have mount and our partner. They started out by bucking and bridging,we rode it out by keeping low(sprawling our arms out wide),and trying to touch our feet together under their legs.(b)They would bridge to the left,so we would sprawl out to the left side, and catch the back of their neck with our right hand.(c)They would bridge to the right so we would sprawl with the left hand and catch the back of their neck with our left hand

2:Again on mount.Out partner would try and lassoo one of our arms to try and bridge and roll us.We would pull our arm back to maintain control and ride out the bridge.

3:We had mount again,as our partner went to bridge,we would kick our right knee to our but to bypass their legs, and jump up to knee ride.We then alternated from side to side.

4:We did what was known as the Superman stretch. We were on mount,we placed our shins behind thier ankles to catch their legs, and thrusted our pelvis into their stomach, and stretching out our hands as if simulating flying. This cause pressure on our partner and should shut them down.4(b)Again the mount and we brought our knees close into our partners ribs, and elbows into their shoulders, and squeezed like crazy creating alot of pressure.4(c)Sqeeze our knees together and we cupped the back of their head with our right arm, pulled it up,and put our  right elbow into their collarbone, again creating lots of pressure.

5:Mount position again and our partner grabs our right arm to bridge and roll us.We swung our left knee up to behind their head,so we ended up sitting on their left shoulder,in side mount.

6:We put everything above together, and would react to one of the drills depending on what our partner did.

7:We had mount and our partner would grab our belt to try and push us off, leaving their neck exposed. We did one of 2 chokes.(1) right hand in the left side of their collar(thumb against their neck). Our left hand then went to the opposite side of their collar, and we put our chest out while pulling our elbows up.(2)our right arm went under their head, and grabbed our left gi cuff.We then bladed our left hand(little finger touching their neck) across their throat

8:We then put it all together using all the above drills

Thursday the 2nd of April Fundamentals

2:This drill we had knee ride on our partner(our right leg was across their belt line, and our left leg was used as an outrigger,at about the 8:00 postion so that our partner couldn’t grab our leg.).They would move around from left to right. We would ride it out(b)Same again but we had our hands ready. They brought their right shoulder up off the ground to attempt an escape,we pushed it back down to the mat. They then brought their left should up and we did the same again, alternating.

3:Same as drill 2(b) again but this time we missed pushing the right shoulder down.We let them roll over and took side back mount(b)We missed the left shoulder, and they rolled into us.We dropped our right knee to the ground, put our left hand under their head, and our right hand under their left but cheek, and rolled them back over to their back to secure side control.

4:we had drill 1 position again. We placed our hands on their chest facing down toward their legs, and spun around 180 degree’s to the opposite side, placing our left knee on the belt line now,and our right leg as the outrigger(hands going to opposite shoulders now).Repeating this back to the other side, alternating from left to right

5:Same setup as drill 4 but this time we added an extra step in.We came around to the top 90 degrees and placed our left leg on their collar bone, then came back to our starting position, then spun around 180 degrees to secure knee ride..Then 90 degrees and placed our right leg into their collarbone, then back to knee ride etc, doing this randomly.

6:We put all the above drills together, moving from left to right, dropping down or back up to knee ride, into the collarbone etc, depending on how our partner would move.

7:Knee ride again. Our left thumb would go deep into the back of their collar(thumb first). Our right side would go into the opposite side collar. We then tried to touch our elbows together (baseball grip)while coming around to North/South trying to take out all the space between our arms.We then tripoded up and placed our left shoulder into the middle of their chest and pulled our partners upper body off the ground, for the Tap.This is know as the spinning choke.

8:same objective as drill 7 but this time we started on the left hand side first, and got a grip with our right hand into their collar, then came back to right hand sideto knee ride.We Inserted the left hand into their collar(deep grips)Came around to North/South,left shoulder on the chest, pulling them up for the tap.The idea with this drill was to get the hard side hand into the collar first.
