Thursday the 28th of May Fundamentals
1:Tonight we started off in our partners half guard,and they have hooked our right leg.We placed weight in our shoulders, posted our left foot out to stopped from being rolled.We then walked our right foot in,and got as close to our partners ass as possible,so that our knee was above their knee.Looking down to our feet now,we used our right hand to push their left leg down,and jumped through to mount.Even if our leg was still slightly trapped,as Geoff said it was better to have 3/4 mount,then be stuck in half guard.(We also punched them in the face
2:Our partner has half guard again,and also the underhook on our right side.We placed our head on the left side,and grabbed their right arm and trapped it against us with our left hand.Tripodding up we bounced our right leg up,until our knee was above their knee.We then switched base,and slid our right knee right out(being careful not to crush their balls if they had some) right through to switch base.We then switched base back to side control.Commonly known as the ball crush drill.
3:Again our partner had half guard,and the underhook.We very nicely put our right shoulder into their left side jaw,and our right hand went under their head putting alot of pressure on their head,which they really liked.We kicked our right leg over to the right side switching base.With pressure still on their jaw,we used our right hand to push their leg freeing our right leg.Once this was free, we came around to side control.
4:We put all 3 drills together.Our partner would get half guard on us and dictate what drill we would use by getting the underhook etc.
Sunday the 24th of May Fundamentals
1:Tonight we started on all fours,and our partner was sprawled on top with their chest on the back of our head,and their right arm was around our chest.We used our left arm to trap their right arm,and pulled it into the centre of our left ribs(Chicken Wing).We then brought our right elbow into the centre to use as a post,and did the same for the right leg.With our left leg we stepped it out,and posted on the left foot.Kicking the right foot right out to the left,we launched oursleves left so our partner face planted onto the mat,and we ended up with their arm still trapped,and our head was on their back,so we ran around to the right to take their back.
2:Again we started in the same pisition as drill 1 but this time our partner had wrapped both their arms around our chest.We still did the same grab of their left hand,and kick out,but this time we ended up with our partner flat on their back,with us on our back,with their arms still grabbibg us at the chest.We then walked around to their feet,and then spinning around to their head breaking their grip,and us in side control.
3:This time our partner had secured side control with their right hand securing our right hip,and thier left hand securing our left shoulder.We used our right forearm to block their left hip.As our partner came sround to top control,we used this momentum to turn us over to all fours.Our partner then wrapped their left hand around our chest,so we went inot drill 1.
4:Side control again,and our partner had the same blocks as drill 3.We had our right forearm in their left hip,and our left forearm against their head.We pushed their head down towards our feet, and pulled our right arm, down and around,and placed our right hand under our knee,so that we had trapped their left hand in between our right arm,and knee.We then hipped out several times faceplanting our partner to the mat putting pressure on their left shoulder.
5:We went through drill 4 again but this time,our partner drove us over before we could hip out so we ended up on all fours.We then claimed thier right arm,kicked out the door and went into drill 2.
Thursday the 21st of May Fundamentals
1:We started off being on mount smothering our partner.They used their arms to push us off,giving us the gift of their arms.We put our right hand in the centre of their chest,and brought the left hand around thier right arm,and on top of our right hand.We then jumped up to a squat,and placed our left foot by their right ear.Stepping over their head with our right foot we slide down the bat pole and captured their right arm.Squeezing our knees together and welding their little finger to the centre of our chest, we lay back and bridged our hips up for the tap.
2:Here were were in side control,and our partner was defending their neck by having their arms in the centre of thier chest.With our left hand we grabbed their gi at the elbow and our it to the ground.With our right hand we placed that on the mat also and did a pushup to jump to knee ride.Posturing up straight we then stepped our left leg over,and slide down thier arm capturing it.We then again squeezed the knees together,and welded their little finger to the centre of our chest,and slowly lay back bridging the hips for the tap.
3:This time we started in drill 2 and came to knee ride,but our partner used their left hand to try and push our left knee off them creating a space.We let go of their left arm,and put our right hand through the space created,and cupped their left shoulder.Standing up now we pulled them onto our feet.Using our left foot,we stepped over to kick them in the small of the back,and spun around 90 degrees to sit in the space we created,capturing the left arm.Again squeezing the knees,welding the little finger to our chest and bridging the hips for the tap.
4:Here we had our partner in guard,and had welded their right forearm to the centre of our chest.We then opened our legs and slid our left foot into their right hip.We then did 2 things simulteanously(1) came up as if to headbutt them,and swung our right foot across their back.This spun us around 90 degrees.Keeping our hips flat, we swung the left leg over their head so the back of our knee was on the back of their neck.Again we squeezed our knees together,welded thier little finger to our chest,and bridged up for the tap.
Sunday the 17th of May Fundamentals
1:Tonight Geoff started with the Rear naked choke.Our partner was on their knees and we were behind them.We brought our right hand around and under their jaw to grab our left shoulder,so that the V of our arm was in their adams apple.Keeping our left hand behind so that our partner couldn’t grab it, we bladed our left hand between out face and the back of their neck(little finger down).Taking out all the space now,we pushed out our chest,until our partner tapped.
2:Same setup as drill 1 but this time we put out right hand on our partners left shoulder(instead of ours).Using this hand as a pivot now,we pulled it back towards us,so our forearm was across their adams apple,until our partner tapped.
3:Same drill as 2 but this time our partner used their hands and placed them on our forearm to pull our arm down(trying to create space).As they did this we pulled back for the choke.
4:Same as drill 3 but we used the monkey grip when they pulld our forearm down.Using our right elbow to drive, we pulled back for the same result,until our partner tapped.
5:This time our partner was on all four’s,and we had their back(riding them like a pony).We slipped our right hand underneath and grabbed their right forearm,and got our hooks in.We then did 3 things simultaneoulsy (1)Pulled their forearm back(2)pulled our hooks back(3) thrusted our hips forward to face plant them onto the mat.Pulling our right hand out, we slipped it under their jaw,and grabbed our left shoulder, going for the Rear naked choke.
6:This time our partner was on our hooks,We grabbed their right arm and arm dragged them forward to our right hand side(making sure their right shoulder was in the centre of our chest.We posted on our right hand on the mat and swung our left leg over to take their back.From here we went into drill 5.6(b)same setup as drill 6 bit this time our partner defended by pulling in their right arm tight to themselves, as went to thrust them forward onto the mat.We rolled them over by pulling them back,and end up on our back also.Our arm still had the choke so we still kept it cranked on until they tapped.
7:Here we had side back control and our right arm was under their right arn,and our left arm was between their arms,gripping tight(Seatbelt).Our partner defended by pulling their right arm back and kicking their right leg out and rolling us over.As they came up to defend,we dropped our right hip down and pulled our right leg through to get our hooks in.From here we went for the Rear Naked Choke.
8:This time we had side back control and the same grips as frill 7, but our partner didn’t roll us.We just slipped our left hand onto otheir right shoulder,and pulled our arm up for the choke.
Thursday the 14th of May Fundamentals
1:Tonight we started with out partner on our hooks.They would move form left to right and we would follow them using no hands.1(b)Our partner would then come up on 1 hook.so we were allowed to use 1 hand to grip either their left or right gi cuff 1(c)Our partner would come stand up,so we were allowed to use 2 hands now to grip while still follow their movement with our hooks.
2:Our partner was on our hooks again,and we had cross grips.Using our feet to cross over,we would come up on our shoulder spinning around to end up with feet in their biceps and our head in between their feet upside down.
3:Again our partner was on our hooks,and our partner would stand up.We would have to keep them at bay by using our legs to place either in biceps, or hips, or hooks.
4:We were lying flat on our back,with our hooks in and grips and our partner was standing.They would move up and down left and right but weren’t allowed to use their hands to grip.Again we would keep them at bay.
5:Our partner was on their knees and we had hooks again.We also had our left foot in their right bicep,and our right leg was dead on the mat by their left leg.Straightening our left leg out to off balance our partner,we pulled them forward,and grabbed their left hand and placed it on our left side,pulling them forward to sweep them over to mount.
6:We were on our backs again with our left shin in their right bicep this time and our left hand gripping their right cuff(Side winder) and our right leg over their lower stomach.We sat up (placing our head in their left shoulder) and came around 90 degrees, to grab their left gi pants at the ankle.Pulling our left leg forward, we loaded their stomach onto out right shin.We then launched them over to our left coming up to knee ride.
7:Same setup as drill 6, but this time our partner came around to the left to pass our guard.This loaded them onto our right shin.We then launched them back coming over to knee ride.
Sunday the 10th of May Fundamentals
1:Tonight we started off with being in side control and we had to escape.
2:Here our partner had mount and we had to escape.
3:This drill we got to pick our favourite guard,(hooks,full or half) and had to escape.
4:Here our partner had mount,and we either had to escape or our partner had to submit us.
5:Our partner had side control,we either had to escape of our partner had to submit us.
6:Here we were both head to head facing our partner,and we both had only 1 move each at a time.
7:same as drill 6 but we got to do 3 moves each.The Idea being to try and submit our partner.
8:Same as drill 6 but we had a time limit on our 1 move of about 10 seconds each.
Thursday the 7th of May Fundamentals
Tonights class was run by Gareth.
1:Tonight we started off with side back control on our partners left hand side with our right hand over their right lat,and had our weight postured back.Our partner went to posture up,so we placed our left knee in between their left shoulder and knee(keeping our hips down) pulling them over to their back,taking knee ride.
2:Head to head and we have sprawled on top of our partner.We placed our left arm between their arms,and had our left lower bicep to their left lower bicep.We pulled their left arm up and came around 45 degrees,pulling them over onto their back.
3:Here we had side back control again.Using our left hand like a claw,we placed it on the back of their neck,and brought our right hand under and through their left arm,and clamped our left forearm.We then did 2 things simultaneously (1) pushed our left hand down to push their head to the mat(2)pulled our right arm up.Our partner ended up flipping onto their back.
4:Head to head again and our partner had dived under to latch onto our left leg to go for the single leg take down.Our right hand shot through all the way under their stomach coming our to ther right side.We placed our right foot back and dropped our right hip onto their left shoulder.We came around to our right hand side 90 degrees,and shunted them over,end up on mount.
5:Side back control and we had our right hand on their right lat.We came around to to their left hip,and swung our left knee into their knee,and spun to our back,taking them with us,then taking their back.We had the option of going for the rear nakered choke.
6:This time our partner had side back control on us,and their right hand on our right lat.We caught their right arm with our right arm(like a chicken wing) and moved our hips to be in line with our partner.From here we dropped our left leg down and rolled our partner over us to their back.
7:Here our partner had top control (we are on all fours)with their stomach on our shoulders,and their left arm between our arms cupping our left shoulder. we posted firmly with our right arm,and grabbed their right arm with our left hand.We looked up with our head to the sky,and kicked our right leg towards our left shoulder.Our partner fell flat on the mat and we were flat on our backs with our head on their back.We then spun around to the left to take and ran around behind to take their back.
8:Our partner has top control,and has brought their left knee forward.We moved slightly to our right(offline),and shot out right arm forward to their left knee to control it.With our right ahnd we grabbed their left arm and came around to our left pulling them down onto their back.
9:Our partner had top control again with their left knee forward.With our rght hand we grabbed their left ankle first,then pulled it up to link our hand in a gable grip.Pulling their knee tight in now,we walked around to their back pulling them forward, to face plant on the mat.
10:Here we were on all fours and so was our partner,but they also had their left hand on our left lat.We shuffled to the back slightly and swung our right arm over to theri right lat.We pushed them forward causing our partner to post.As they did we used our left hand to grab their right arm(posting arm) flattening our partner out to the mat.
Sunday the 3rd of May Fundamentals
Tonight Gareth ran the class in Geoff’s absence, and we ran through passing our partners guards in different positions.
1:We were on our partners hooks postured back,and because our partner was lying on their back there was no immediate danger of a sweep,or choke, or armbar.Our partner came up to a sitting position.We used our left hand and placed it on their left collarbone.With our right hand we reached through underneath their legs,and grabbed their right foot,and stepped off their left hook with our right leg, freeing the leg up.From here we spun their right foot causing them to spin around 90 degree’s,going to knee ride.
2:Here they had their hooks again,and they sat up.We lifted our right leg up to be able to slide it across their left knee,and then wrapped our right arm around their head,and jumped forward,setting us up to go for the guillotine.
3:Hooks again and this time our partner pulled us back down.We had to offset their hips slightly by stepping to the left.Keeping our hips down, we walked around to the left,and secured their collar to side control.The key was to twist their hips.
4:hooks again,but this time we put our head to the left of our partner on their stomach,and our left hand grabbed their right foot and pulled it towards their left, to pull the knee down.We came up to a tripod,and pushed our legs off,and jumped around 90 degrees to our left,ending up in side control.Note-When we jumped over,we placed our left shoulder into their stomach.
5:We did pass or sweep using the above drills depending on the situation.
6:Here we were in our partners guard,they went to go for a sub and opened their legs.We put our left elbow to our left knee,and postured back,while our right hand pinned their left hip.
7:Closed guard again.We postured back,and brought our elbows in closed to our body,and pinned their hips to the mat.Shuffling backwards,we waited for their legs to pop open.We dropped our left elbow to the ground pinning their left leg,and holding our forearm to the opposite leg,walking down to side control.
8:Pass or sweep using when we were in closed guard.
9:This time our partner had half guard.We placed our left armpit over their left shoulder,and turned to face their feet(as if watching T.V ).We walked our left foot close into their butt,and used our left hand to push on their left knee to pop it off our leg,jumping to mount position.
10:Half guard again.We placed our left armpit on their left shoulder again,and pulled their head towards us with our left elbow.Keeping our right leg straight not bent,we walked around to the left slighlty arching our back and bringing our weight forward to put pressure on a smaller area of their stomach,making it uncomfortable for them.Wlaking all the way to side control. Note Gareth said imagine you are in side control not halfguard.
11:Half guard again but this time we passed thier gaurd but as we did,our partner brought their left leg up and into our stomach,and rolled to their left side.We got a grip on their left ankle with our right elbow,and grabbed the back of their belt.We placed our right shoulder tight on their left hip,pulling our weight back we walked slowly around to side control.
Thursday the 30th of April Fundamentals
1:Tonight we started with our partner kneeling,and we had our feet in their hips, and right hand grabbing their collar,and left hand grabbing their sleeve(also slightly on our left butt cheek).Our partner would move from left to right,and go forward and backward.Our aim was to control our partner and keep them at distance).1(b)They then stood up and we had to maintain the control.
2:Same grips but this time our partner stood up and gave us their right foot.We grabbed their right foot with our left hand and released the grip from their collar with our right hand and grabbed their right gi cuff, Our left foot stayed where it was(in their right hip),and our right foot went behind their left knee.Once this was setup we pushed our left foot towards them,and pulled our right foot towards us causing them to fall on their butt.We end up sitting on our knees to the lower part of their shin(to avoid being placed in half guard)
3:Same grips as starting positon on drill 2 but this time our partner put their left foot forward.Our left hand grip stayed the same,we turned over to our right butt cheek, the left foot went into the centre of their stomach,our right foot came between their legs.We then push our leet foot towards them and kicked our right leg to their right ankle.They fell on their butt and we again went to our knees.
4:We put it all together with our partner placing either their left or right foot in front.
Geoff made the point of going backwards to our knees once we swept them to avoid half guard
5:We then had the same grips as drill 1,and had the option.Either we would sweep our partner or they would pass our guard.
6:Here our partner was kneeling again and we had the grips.We turned on our right hip slightly while pulling their right cuff to the centre of our chest.We kicked out our left foot,and spun around 90 degree’s,swinging our left leg over their back and right leg came around and swung over their neck so the back of our knee was at the back of their neck.With their right arm secured, we grabbed their left gi pant at the ankle and pulled them oevr onto their back,going for the armbar.4 things had to happen 1)Hip penetration 2)Top leg bent 3)knees squeezed 4)Little finger welded to the centre of our chest. we lay back slowly for the tap.
7:Same setup again as drill 6 but this time our partner leaned forward,and grabbed our right leg as if to start their pass.We kicked our right leg out and swung it over their head so the back of the knee was at the back of their neck.We then swung our left leg over our right leg so that the back of the knee was over our right ankle.Pulling their right arm across to the right side of us, we bridged up for the triangle.
couple of points on this last one 1)if you cant quite swing your left leg over your right,use your left hand at the shin to pull the right leg down.Never pull the ankle 2) If our partner has their right arm at our left side making it impossible for us to get the triangle,use our body to bridge our hips up to grab their arm and swing it to the right hand side.
