John Will @ GSW Martial Arts Wellington August 2009
Wow!!
After Chris and Jill from the MVD added extra mats to the rear of the dojo, I made the decision to open the seminar up to everyone and encouraged all GSW members to get to the seminar. The result was stunning! Over 60 students turned up to enjoy another classic John Will session. There were 6 Purple Belts and over 20 Blue Belts! We also awarded 3 new Blues on the night. Congrats to Michael Greville, Tony Tse and Duncan Hewer on their new ranks.
Photos from the session can be found on our flickr page here >>
Thanks to everyone for making this such a fantastic night!!!

Thursday the 20 of August Fundamentals
1:Tonight we started with our feet in our partners hips and we had control of their wrist,or gi cuffs(Thumbs out).We had 3 choices(1) Turn on right hip and put our knee across their belly, pull them forward for the sweep (2) They stand up and put 1 leg forward we would grab the leg, push the opposite hip back and put them on their butt(3)They came up onto 1 knee so we put out foot under that knee for the hook, pull their arms forward, and lift up that same knee for the hooking sweep.
2:Here we had the same grips as drill 1 but our partner stood up and moved from left to right and forward and backward. When they put one leg forward we seized the opportunity and grabbed the leg to sit them on their butt.
3:Here our partner was turtled on all fours and we had side back mount. We placed our right knee in between their left elbow and knee, and our right hand under their armpit. Our partner grabbed our arm and pulled it tight to their chest. They then kicked their right leg out and rolled over their right shoulder with us following them(making sure we kept our head down to avoid a face plant on the mat).
4:Same position again as drill 3 but this time when we put our right arm under their lat,we put our left hand between their arms, and grabbed our right hand(Seat belt clamp). Our partner did the same again by grabbing our right arm and rolling us over but,we followed them over and still had our grips. They would buck around but as soon as bridged up,we swung our right leg under, and behind their right knee, and our left leg went over their left leg.
5:Rear naked choke. Our partner was on their knees and we were behind them.We swung our left hand under their chin to grab our right shoulder,so the V of our arm was in the middle of their neck(trying to take out all the space). With our right hand we placed it behind ourselves(not in front of our partner),and brought our right hand between the back of their neck and our face.Blading into the back of their neck,we pushed our chest out,and squeezed for the tap.
5B:A variation on drill 5:Instead of grabbing out right shoulder with our left hand,we placed it on our partners right shoulder.Bringing our right hand up again,we placed our left arm on our right bicep.Again blading into the back of their neck with our right hand, and pulling back our right arm for the choke.
6:We put it all together by starting off in side back control, and getting the Seat belt(drill4).Our partner would roll us over, and buck around until they bridged up.We swung our right leg under to get the hooks, then went for one of the chokes(drill 5 or 5B)
Geoff also talked about a willingness to follow our partner over their back(drill 4) and maintaining control.
Sunday the 16th of August Fundamentals
1:Tonight we started with our hooks in and our arms controlling their elbows with our partner’s head on our stomach. Our partner came up on their right foot.We lifted our left leg up,while keeping control of their right elbow, off balacing them over to their side. They then brought the left leg up so we did the same for the opposite side.
2:Again we had our hooks in,but lying flat on our back.We came up and got the underhook with our right hand, and the overhook with our right capturing their right elbow. We then rolled back onto our left shoulder, kicking our right leg up,and our left leg away, sweeping our partner over to mount.
3:Here we had hooks again and our partner grabbed our gi pants at the knees.Using bot hands we grabbed their right gi sleeve at the wrist and launched ourselves back taking their arm with us to break the grip. This caused our partner to nearly faceplant onto the mat at our right hand side. The only thing stopping them was their hands. We then postd up and, swung our left hand over to grab their left lat.Again we rolled onto our left hand side, and kicked our left leg up,and right leg away from us sweeping them to side control,or half sweeping them and catching their left arm between our left elbow and knee.We then spun around so our right hand went underneath their collar, and our right shoulder was right in the middle of their stomach with alot of pressure. With our right hand we put our thumb into the opposite side collar, and turned back using our body weight to blade our right forearm across their neck for the choke
4:Again hooks in but our partner grabbed our gi pants at the ankles. We grabbed their right gi cuff again, pulled our left leg out,and launched it away from us while pulling their right arm forward, pulling them to our right hand side.Again coming up and using our left hand to grab their left lat.again we rolled over onto our left shoulder kicking our legs and going for the choke in drill 3.
5:Here we had our feet in our partners hips, and had control of our partners sleeves. We had the choice of the armdrag(adding that to our arsenal) or going over the 3 sweeps.(1) Turn on right hip and put our knee across their belly, pull them forward for the sweep (2) They stand up and put 1 leg forward we would grab the leg, push the opposite hip back and put them on their butt(3)They came up onto 1 knee so we put out foot under that knee for the hook, pull their arms forward, and lift up that same knee for the hooking sweep.
Thursday the 13th of August Fundamentals
1:Tonight we started with our feet in our partners hips and we had control of their wrist,or gi cuffs(Thumbs out).We had 3 choices(1) Turn on right hip and put our knee across their belly, pull them forward for the sweep (2) They stand up and put 1 leg forward we would grab the leg, push the opposite hip back and put them on their butt(3)They came up onto 1 knee so we put out foot under that knee for the hook, pull their arms forward, and lift up that same knee for the hooking sweep.
2:We started off with our feet in our partners hips, and control of their sleeves. We put our left foot behind their knee, then followed with the right.Ten we put the right foot back in the hip,and follwed with the left, then put our right foot in ther left bicep, and followed with the left, then right foot back to the hip followed by the left. Also did cross grips with our hands. We did this over and over to keep our partner at bay and in control.
3:Here we had our partner in closed guard, with our left hand controlling their right sleeve(or wrist),and our right hand right behind their collar (Right behind their neck). We then opened our legs and hipped to our left hand side.,and put our left leg dead on the mat,and our right shin accross their belly.Using all our core we locked our right arm straight, and stretched our upper body pulling our partner over sweeping them to mount.(Basic sweep in the Blue Belt Syllabus)
4:Here we had mount, and had our right wrist in their left side gi cuff crushing our elbow into our partners chest. With our left hand we posted it out on the mat(In case they tried to bridge us forward),and brought our right knee up just under their armpit. With our left hand we kaate chopped their left side shoulder getting as close as we could to their neck as possible.Gently placing our head down on the mat,we squeezed our elbows back, and stretched out our chest for the choke.
5:We wrapped out the basic sweep to choke above.
6:Here we went for drill 4,but just as we got our right hand in their collar our partner bridged up,and rolled onto their left hand side.We swung our left knee to just under their left ear.Posting forward onto our left hand,we put all our weight on our right leg which was on their ribs.We then swung our left leg over their head, and caught their right arm.Squeezing our knees together,we welded their litte finger to our chest, and bridged up for hip penetration for the armbar.
7:We started in closed guard, and went for the basic sweep. We placed our right hand in their gi collar to go for the choke(Drill 4) our partner bridged up,and onto their side so we went for drill 6.
8:Here we went for drill 6,and went to lock in the armbar, but our partner locked both of their hands together.Rather than go for the tug of war,we put our right leg between their head and left arm,and took our left leg off their head,to allow our partner to think they could escape by coming to their knees. As they did we swung our right knee around the back of their neck, grabbed our right shin with our left hand(for those with short legs
),and swung our left leg over our right ankle, squeezing like a bastard for the triangle.
9:We started out in guard to basic sweep,to the arm bar(drill 6),they grabbed their hands,so we went for the triangle
10:We had the triangle locked on but our partner grabbed our leg with their right hand to try and prevent us by blocking the triangle. We bridged our hips up,and grabbed their right hand at the same time to bring it over to our right side.
Sunday the 9th of August Fundamentals
1:Tonight we started with our feet in our partners hips and we had control of their wrist,or gi cuffs(Thumbs out).We had 3 choices(1) Turn on right hip and put our knee across their belly, pull them forward for the sweep (2) They stand up and put 1 leg forward we would grab the leg, push the opposite hip back and put them on their butt(3)They came up onto 1 knee so we put out foot under that knee for the hook, pull their arms forward, and lift up that same knee for the hooking sweep.
2:Here we had our partner in closed guard, with our left hand controlling their right sleeve(or wrist),and our right hand right behind their collar (Right behind their neck).
3:We went to go for drill 2 but our partner sat back on their heels,as we turned on our left hand side, and placed went to place our right shin across their body, making it hard for us to do the basic sweep. We tuned and lay on our back, and grabbed their right gi cuff with our left hand, and pulled it to our right side.Posting out our right hand we sat right up and put pur left hand over their back to their right Lat,welding them to our body.We then rolled back and swept our partnet over to mount. This is one of Geoff’s favourite sweeps.
4:We again went to go for drill 2 and got as far as turning on our side, and placing our right shin in their belly, but our partner stepped their right leg over our left leg to pass around. We posted on our left hand and sat right up and placed our left hand over their back and grabbed their right side lat.Sitting back down again,we rolled over onto our left shoulder taking our partner with us sweeping them over to knee ride.4(b)Slight variation, instead of our partner stepping over, they postured back,so we did the same thing as drill 4.
5:(One from Gareth)This time our partner had us in side control, with the underhook.Using our left hand we grabbed their right elbow and then placed our right forearm in their left hip,and hipped away giving us enough space to bring our left knee through to their belly. From here we came around to grab their left gi pants at the ankle with our right hand.We then lifted their left leg up,and pulled them forward sweeping them over.
Thursday the 6th of August Fundamentals
1:We started off being on mount smothering our partner. They used their arms to push us off, giving us the gift of their arms.We put our right hand in the centre of their chest, and brought the left hand around their right arm,and on top of our right hand.We then jumped up to a squat, and placed our left foot by their right ear.Stepping over their head with our right foot we slide down the bat pole and captured their right arm.Squeezing our knees together and welding their little finger to the centre of our chest, we lay back and bridged our hips up for the tap.
2:Here we went for drill 1 again but when we got to sliding down the bat pole and capturing their right arm,our partner turned their thumb towards the front, grabbed our left leg, looked over their left shoulder, and walked around to their knees.(b)Again our partner escaped the arm bar but when they came around to their knees, we opened our legs wide like an old whore.Because we still had control of their right arm, we swung our right leg over their back,so the back of our calf was on the back of their neck.We then bridged up and pulled their arm to our right hand side.We then swung our left leg over our right so the back of our knee was over our ankle. We squeezed our heels down, and in some cases grabbed their head for the triangle.Note If we used our left hand to grab our right foot,it must be at the shin, and not at the ankle.
3:Here our partner had mount on us,and went for drill 1.We turned our thumb and went for drill 2 escape, coming to our knees.Once here we went the opposite4 direct(to the left) coming back around to side control. From here we used our left hand to grab their right tricep, and jumped to knee ride.Stepping over their head,we slide down the bat pole, squeezed the knees, with hip penetration, and lay back for the tap.
4:Here we went for drill 1, our partner escaped,so we either went for the triangle, or they the escape coming around to our side control going for the near arm bar.doing this over and over.
5:Here Geoff explained how important it was to have the little finger welded to our chest, otherwise all they had to do was turn the thumb and go for the escape. If they did manage to escape bywith the little finger welded,we would go with them, and still have control of their arm.As explained before,we need 4 things for the arm bar(1)finger welded to our chest(2)elbow in our belly(3)legs over their head(4)Hip penetration
6:Here Geoff also explained that if our partner gripped both hand together and locked,we would beak the grip and grab the elbow, and keep the arms separate. Also grabbing their leg would stop them from moving around.
Thursday the 30th of July Fundamentals
1:Tonight we started with our feet in our partners hips and we had control of their wrist,or gi cuffs(Thumbs out).We had 3 choices(1) Turn on right hip and put our knee across their belly, pull them forward for the sweep (2) They stand up and put 1 leg forward we would grab the leg, push the opposite hip back and put them on their butt(3)They came up onto 1 knee so we put out foot under that knee for the hook, pull their arms forward, and lift up that same knee for the hooking sweep.
2::(Backsweep) Here we had guard with our left hand in the back of their collar, and our left hand gripping their right right gi cuff. Our partner stood up and postured back.We open our legs, and dropped our butt to the mat,and pulled our knees in together so they came in across their stomach,at the same time letting go of their sleeves and grabbing their ankles. With our knees we then pushed them back, and pulled their ankles towards us,causing them to fall back.We then grabbed their right sleeve with our left hand, posted up on our right hand, and tucked our right leg under their left leg. With a series of little posts now we used our right hand to come around to the right side until we ended up on mount, and punched them in the face at least once.
3:We found a spot on the mat,and tucked our elbows in by our knees.Looking over our shoulder, and trying to avoid the spider,we rolled over our left shoulder and came to our knees, jumped back to our starting position and did the same again, and alternated shoulders.3This time were on our knees, and rolled over our left and right shoulders, jumping back to our starting position.
4:(Front Sweep)Starting with our partner standing and our feet in their hips, and gripping their sleeves with both hands. They would lean forward. We would slightly bend our knees, and lift them up pulling them forward,so they were loaded onto our legs.We then tilted our head to one side and would lower them down slightly so(as Geoff says) we could check their ear for wax.In this case I’ll use our right side as an example. We then lowered them further, and rolled them over further, rolling over our right shoulder all the way until they were flat on their back and we were on mount, stretching our knees under their arms.Note Our partner has to work with us and roll over their shoulder also.
5:Here we had guard again and our partner stood up and leaned forward. We balanced them on our legs. With our left hand we pulled on their right shouler, and took our left leg out of their hip. This caused our partner to spin around, and end up on their back between our legs and we caught their left arm with both hands. We then squeezed our knees together, welded their little finger to the centre of our chest, and bridged up for the armbar.
6:Again we had guard and our partner stood up.We went to do the back sweep, but our partner grabbed our collar,so we couldn’t drop them on their butt.We let go of their left gi cuff with our right hand and grabbed their left ankle using this as a pivot to come around 90 degrees. While still gripping their right arm,we swung our left leg so our knee was in the back of their neck.Pulling them down to the ground while lifting up their left ankle, our partner end up on their back on the ground, and again we had their left arm between our legs.We then again squeezed our knees, welded their little finger to our chest, and bridged for the hip penetration for the armbar.
