Thursday the 29th of October Fundamentals

1:Tonight we started with our feet in our partners hips and we had control of their wrist,or gi cuffs(Thumbs out).We had 3 choices(1) Turn on right hip and put our knee across their belly, pull them forward for the sweep (2) They stand up and put 1 leg forward we would grab the leg, push the opposite hip back and put them on their butt(3)They came up onto 1 knee so we put out foot under that knee for the hook, pull their arms forward, and lift up that same knee for the hooking sweep.

2:Here we started in Guard with our right hand in the back of their  right collar.space.From here we pushed our left  deep into the back of their left side collar.(The idea was to try and get out thumbs touching). We then lay back dwn to and closed our legs to get full guard again, and brought our elbows together putting our chest through the hole waiting for the Tap.

3:(Front Choke)Here again we had Guard. We opened our legs and came up and posted on our left hand to create space, and wrapped our right hand around their head,so our forearm was accross their throat.Bringing our left hand underneath,we grabbed our right hand, and clasped them both together.Dropping our left elbow down we lay back down to put our partner in full guard again. We then stretched our legs back abd brought our arms towards us for the Tap.

4:Here we went from mount and our partner rolled to the left side so we got side Mount. Our right hand grabbed their right side collar, and fed it to our left hand which came around their head,so our forearm was around their throat.Bringing our right hand under their right hand,we grabbed our left forearm and bladed down to the ground(Starting the lawn mower) for the tap.

5:Rear naked choke. Our partner was on their knees and we were behind them.We swung our left hand under their chin to grab our right shoulder,so the V of our arm was in the middle of their neck(trying to take out all the space). With our right hand we placed it behind ourselves(not in front of our partner),and brought our right hand between the back of their neck and our face.Blading into the back of their neck,we pushed our chest  out,and squeezed for the tap.****Nice action shot Roblong but you should have tapped earlier*********

6:A varition on 5 but we started on mount, to side mount, to take the back. From here we got both hooks in,and with our left hand we went under our partners left arm to grab their forearm.Thrusting forward and flattening out our partner,we put our right hand under their throat to grab our left shoulder, taking out all the space. We then bladed our left hand into the back of their neck for the tap.

Geoff also explained about getting the chokes right as opposed to having shit technique.

Thursday the 22nd of October Fundamentals

1:Tonight we started with our feet in our partners hips and we had control of their wrist,or gi cuffs(Thumbs out).We had 3 choices(1) Turn on right hip and put our knee across their belly, pull them forward for the sweep (2) They stand up and put 1 leg forward we would grab the leg, push the opposite hip back and put them on their butt(3)They came up onto 1 knee so we put out foot under that knee for the hook, pull their arms forward, and lift up that same knee for the hooking sweep.

2:Here our partner stood up from our hooks. We came up and grabbed their right leg with our left hand and pulled it towards us while spinning around 90 degrees.Because our right foot was still behind their left knee,we put our right leg over our left ankle to get the X-Guard.

3:Same setup as drill 2 but this time we grabbed their right leg on the outside, rolling back 180 degrees our partner took a big step enabling us to get both hooks into their right knee for the X-Guard again.

4:Here we had double underhooks and rolled back.As we rolled back we lifted the right leg up high, stretched out our left leg, spun 90 degree’s and placed our left leg over our right ankle for X-Guard.

5.Our partner was on our hooks again, and stood. We attempted to get the X-Guard but couldn’t quite get their but still had both hooks. We dropped our left hook down to their ankle, spun around 90 degrees to our left hand side, and brought our right foot  over our left ankle, and tweeked their right leg up and forward so they fell on their butt.We then jumped to side control.

Sunday the 18th of October Fundamentals

1:Tonight we started with our partner being on our hooks, and we were lying flat on our backs. We came up and got double underhooks, and pulled them off their base,to roll on our backs again. We then rolled up again to sit them on our hooks, and lay flat on our backs again, over and over.

2:Here our partner was on our hooks again but stood up,so all we had was our feet bheind their knees and no hand grips. We came up and replaced our right hook with our left hand, spun around 90 degrees, extended our left leg out(to off balance),and placed our right foot over our left ankle to get the X-Guard.

3:Same startup as drill 2 but this time we dropped our hooks down, came up and grabbed their right leg(inside leg).We then rolled over our left shoulder,at the same time lifting our left hook up causing our partner to fall onto their back.

4:Same setup as drill 3 but this time we grabbed their right leg on the outside, rolling back our partner took a big step enabling us to get both hooks into their right knee for the X-Guard again.

5:Here put put it all together. Our partner started on our hooks and stood up.We followed them and went into one of the drills above.

6:Here we had double underhooks and rolled back.As we rolled back we lifted the right leg up high, stretched out our left leg, spun 90 degree’s and placed our left leg over our right ankle for X-Guard.

Thursday 15th of October Fundamentals

1:Tonight we started with our feet in our partners hips and we had control of their wrist,or gi cuffs(Thumbs out).We had 3 choices(1) Turn on right hip and put our knee across their belly, pull them forward for the sweep (2) They stand up and put 1 leg forward we would grab the leg, push the opposite hip back and put them on their butt(3)They came up onto 1 knee so we put out foot under that knee for the hook, pull their arms forward, and lift up that same knee for the hooking sweep.

2:Here we were in our partners guard, and they had there hand in our gi collar pulling us down.We had to place our hands on their body and pull ourselves up.

2B:Same postition as Drill but this time when we postured up we had to look up at the ceiling.

3:Here we were in our partners guard again, and they had their left arm overwrapping our right arm,and also had control of our right coller. We turned them on their right side brought our right knee up to our right elbow, and circled our right hand around to create space and pull our hand out and postured up.

4:Here we did a series of standing passes. The first one was placing our hands ou our partners knees and jumping from side to side

4B:Same setup as drill 4 but this time we slid our knee down our partners knee depending on which side to knee ride.

4C:Again same setup as drill 4 but this time we pinned one  of our patners knees down, and brought our opposite knee through, and posted on the other foot(Knee through guard pass)

4D:Here we pulled our partners knees together and jumped to mount.

5:Here our partner had us on their hooks. We wrapped our arms around our partners thighs, and placed our head on the opposite side, and jumped over, and around to side control.

5B:Same again as drill 5 but this time when we jumped,we balanced on our head first before jumping to side control, ending up facing upwards. We then had to switch base.

6:We then went from our partners guard and had to use one of the passes.

Sunday the 11th of October Fundamentals

1:Tonight we started with being in our partners Side control, with our hands up protecting our neck.We would then use our forearms to push on our partners ribs, until they touched our thighs.Bumping them up,we then brought our right knee through, and spun around 90 degree’s to face our partner, putting them in guard. We then went to the opposite side and did the same drill, alternating from both sides.

2:Same position again but this time our partner would have their right hand blocking our right hip,and the left hand cupping our left shoulder(This is our biggest issue with the pinning of this shoulder). We would buck and bridge to get our left hand under their right armpit(Underhook).Once we had the underhook we would hip away to the left until their was enought space to turn and go to our knees and on all fours(remember that the left shoulder stays in the same place, and we move our body away)

3:This drill we we on all fours, and our partner had top control, and had their arm wrapped around out somach. We brought our right arm into the centre to base ourselves, and place our left leg out at about 7:30.Using our left arm,we grabbed their right arm,and clutched it to us like a chicken wing.Kicking our right leg out fully(Opening the door) we ended up with our head resting on our partners back, and them on all fours. With the pressure still on their arm,we came around, and switched to the side with the option of taking their back.

4:Same startup as drill 3,only this time our partner rolled over with us.We walked around to the right to break their arm grip, then spun around to side control.

5:This time our partner had side control on us,with their left arm over our head, and the intention of coming aorund to top control. We jammed our right elbow into their left hip and as they came around to the top,we took a free rider, and spun over to all fours, getting right under our partners base

5b:Here when our partner came aound to the top, they wrapped their arms around our stomach,so we went into drill 3.

6:Again our partner had side control with their left arm over our head.We pushed their head down towards our feet, and brought our right hand over their left arm,and grabbed our right knee trapping their arm.Keeping pressure on their left shoulder with our right hip,we scooted our butt out,to take their back.

Fundamentals – Sunday October 4th

Hooks Guard

First up we warmed up with some hooking drills

In each case, start with your hooks in i.e. opponent kneels, your feet are inside their thighs

1.

  • Scoot your butt toward them so you’re in close
  • Get double underhooks – each arm under their armpit, hands clasp the shoulder
  • Flare your elbows & rock back
  • Keep your knees bent and hooks connected
  • Sit forward, putting them back on the mat
  • Let your underhooks go, lie back, sit up, repeat

2.

Same as before, but your grips this time will be over/under

  • scoot
  • left arm underhooks their right arm –  grab their shoulder
  • right arm grabs their left elbow/tricep – trap their forearm between your elbow and ribs
  • rock back and roll onto your right shoulder
  • sit back forward and return their weight to the mat
  • release your grips, lie back and repeat

We then did a couple of variations on the first drill.

Sweeps

1. Over/Under Hooking Sweep

  • Hooks
  • Scoot your butt in
  • Over/Under grips*
  • Roll back over your right shoulder
  • Keep your left hook connected behind their knee as you roll

*keep your underhooking arm connected to your left knee as you scoot in. This makes it much harder for them to underhook you in return.

From here you can either:

a) wait till you feel their weight shifting toward being swept, then disengage your hook & take side control

b) keep your hook connected and follow them over to mount

2. Over/Under Stuffed-Arm Sweep

Same as the Over/Under, but this time rather than welding their arm to your body

  • grab their right wrist
  • bring it in front of their body and ’stuff’ it into their stomach
  • continue as before

2a) In this variation, you sit out on an angle creating a space for your opponent to fall into. It takes a lot of effort out of the sweep as they’re essentially just falling into the hole you’ve created.

Get your grips as per the ’stuff’ sweep, but this time:

  • left hook is inside their right thigh
  • your right hook tucks underneath your left leg – foot to the right of their right knee
  • sit out to approx. 45 degrees
  • stuff the arm, roll over the right shoulder
  • disengage the hook & take side control

From here we transitioned to the forearm choke from side-control.

From side-control on their right side you:

  • reach under their near arm and grab their collar with your right hand
  • trap their forearm between your elbow and ribs
  • slice the blade of your hand across their neck to grab their far collar
  • bring your forearm down across their throat
  • apply as much weight on your forearm as you can to apply the choke
