Purple Belt Darren Brown took class tonight as Geoff was away. With almost 40 on the mat it was a challenging class.
Class Mon 19 Apr
2 types of kneeride – first grab behind their head while other grabs far knee, then pull up to align your knee, hip and shoulder turning your opponent into the letter U. This sucks their energy. The other kneeride is low and hunting for the opportunity for a submission. Your shin is across their belly with little to no weight on your foot, the other leg floats out for support. Your right hand is outside your knee, acting as both a post and to block their hip while they go spastic, like in side control, again without too much weight. Your left hand is controlling behind their head.
Near armbar – grab behind their tricep of the near arm (thumb down). Straighten your body and pull up on their arm. Step your left foot over their head with control – you’ll know your doing this if you can step back and forth to reset and your upper body doesn’t move and you don’t kick your opponent in the head. Slide down the back of their arm, so you get good hip penetration and use your right arm to wrap their arm close to your body. Weld their little finger to your chest, thumb up and break the arm.
Far arm bar – from the low hunting kneeride, fake an attack on the near arm. They don’t need to put their hand on your knee. Reach under their far arm, grab their tricep, and up and crush by putting your elbow through their solar plexus. They make a funny noise, change colour and turn towards you. Spin on the ball of your right foot and kick them in the belt with your left foot, staying low while you spin. Get good hip penetration, squeeze your knees, attach their pinky to your chest and break their arm.
The more you fake for an armbar on either side, the more the attack their arms, exposing their neck. Put your left hand behind their head. Put 4 fingers low inside their lapel and zipper them up to make the baseball grip (your hands don’t have to touch). Bring your top elbow down to your bottom elbow, this will turn you towards their head, they may try to defend by putting their near arm in the way, kill this by driving your knee over the top of it and get it out the way by ’sliding fir home’. Put your head on the side you just came from and shoulder on their belly. Tripod up and pull your elbows to your back.
1:Here we started off on our partners hooks.We dropped our base to the mat,and our hands came down and around to grab their butt,so our biceps were blocking their knees pinning them down.With our left leg we stepped it off,and placed it by our right knee.
1b:Same again as drill 1 but this time our partner would be a bit more active and try to follow us with their hooks.
1c:Again same as drill 1 but this time our partner would follow us with their hooks and try and get underhooks.
2:Again we were on the hooks keeping low.With our right hand we pushed down on their left ankle,and scooted back(our weight doesn’t come forward).We then slid our right knee backward.Our left shoulder and bicep came into their right leg,as we switched base into hips to pass the guard.
2b:Again we went for 2 but out partner would give us a bit of grief by following with their hooks.
2c:This time they would try grabbing our arms,as well as trying to follow with their hooks.
3:Same again as drill 1 but this time our partner had the underhook on our left side.With our right hand,we pushed down on their knee keeping our base down,and coming around to pass the guard.
4:Here our partner had the hooks,and were attacking out arms.We would block the knees,and shuffle back keeping down until we were in a comfortable position,until we could pass the guard.
5Here were were still on the hooks but our head was in the middle of our partners stomach,and we were between their legs.Staying as low as possible,and stretching down (going backwards) we walked around to our left side,so we their right knee would come to the ground with our body weight.We walked all the way around until we could secure side control.
1:Tonight we started with our feet in our partners hips and we had control of their wrist,or gi cuffs(Thumbs out).We had 3 choices(1) Turn on right hip and put our knee across their belly, pull them forward for the sweep (2) They came up onto their left knee so we put out foot under that knee for the hook,pull their arms forward,and lift up that same knee for the hooking sweep.(3)They stand up and put left leg forward so we would grab it and pull it towards us,,and push our left leg which was in the centre of their stomach back to put them on their butt.
2:(Basic Arm Bar)Here we had Mount on our partner,and were smothering them which caused them to push up on our chest.With our right hand we put it on their chest between their arms,and with the left hand were circled their right arm,and put it on our right hand.Jumping up to a squat,we placed our left foot by their right ear,then stepped over their head with the same foot,and slid down the arm(Bat Pole).We then squeezed our knees together,welded their little finger to our chest,and bridged up for hip penetration for the armbar.
3:We go for drill 2 but stuff it up when we got to sitting down.Our partner sucked back their right arm.We posted on our left arm,and grabbed their left bicep with our right hand,so our elbow was facing away from us.We then pushed off our left hand and sat on their ribs,then sat down on the opposite side,trapping their left arm.With our left hand we grabbed under their leg,and squeezed our knees together,welded their little finger to our chest,and bridged up for hip penetration for the armbar.Once we got the tap,we came back up and placed our right hand between their legs,and swung our left leg over their body to bring us to the opposite side control.We then proceded to mount,repeating the drill.
4:Here we had top control,with our partner having their arms up in the defence position.With our hands faced down on their chest under their elbows, we used our forehead and legs to push their left forearm down towards their left knee. keeping as low as possible,we then swapped hands so the right hand grabbed the left arm,and our knees were either side of our partners face.We then brought our left knee down further than the right so the left hand could grabbed the left leg,and we could roll to our left,so our left leg came up,and our right leg went across their head trapping their arm ,squeezing the knees for the armbar.
1:Here we had our partner inside control,and they would move.We had to keep control of them.
2:Here our partner had us in side contol.We would either escape and switch or they would keep us in control.
3:(Near Armbar)Here we had knee ride.With our left hand we grabbed their right arm and pulled it up.Transferring all our weight to our right knee,we stepped over their head,sat down on our butt,welded their little finger to our chest,and squeezed our knees together,lying back with hip penetration for the armbar.
4:(Far Armber)Again we had kneeride but this time our partner pushed with their left hand on our right knee creating a bit of space.With our right hand we grabbed their left arm at the elbow,and pulled them onto our feet.Stepping around,and kicking them in the small of the back with our left foot, we again claimed the left arm this time,welding the little finger to our chest,squeezing the kness,and bridging up with hip penetration for the armar.
5:Here we had side control with our left hand under their right wrist.Pushing up with our left hand,we jump our left leg over their head,wipered our right leg up to squeeze our knees together,welding the little finger to our chest,bridging up with hip penetration for the armbar.
6:Side control again,coming around to top control,with our left hand under their left wrist.We then stepped over their head with our right leg,squeezing our knees together,welding their little finger to our chest for the armber.
7:Side control again but this time we had the underhook on our far side.We came up and lifted them onto their right side almost onto our knees and spiked down onto their chest with our right elbow.From here we stepped over their head spinning around to the left side,squeezing our knees together,welding their little finger to our chest for the armbar.
8:We picked 3 moves above we liked,and repped 10 each,the swapped with our partner.
1:We started with hooks and underhooks ,coming up and pulling our partner off their base,over and over.Keeping out elbows up high,and head low.
2:This time we were on our partners hooks,and they wee going for Drill 1.As they came up we blocked by grabbing their shins,and stepping out right hook off,then left hook.
3Here we shook our partners hands,and came up and placed our right foot between their legs,at the same time grabbing the right underhook,and falling to our left side sweeping them over or trying to.
4:Same setup as drill 3 but this time we had (elbow-knee)and sat back down on our left ankle,and keeping low,we fell to out left side kicking up our right leg,and kicking our left leg out,sweeping our partner over to side control.
5.A drill with our partner,we had hooks,and would pull them off their base,and stretch our legs out,and palce them on their knees,and lay back again,then we would come up and do the same thing until we had reached the end of the mat,and then we swapped.
6:Here we started with coming up with right hand underhook and left hand overhook,to sweep them over,but out partner would step off our hooks.We would follow them by butt scooting in close,attemping a few times before we rolled back on our left shoulder,and kicked the right hook up,and the left hook out.
7:Hooks again,and we went to go for drill 6,but our partner would grab our knees.We grabbed the right hand and pulled it to our right side,with our chest in their right shoulder connecting with them so they couldn’t pull their arm back.With our left hand we grabbed their left lat and welded their body to us.We came up and posted on our right hand,then put it between their arms,rolling back onto our left shoulder,kicking the right leg up and the left leg out,sweeping them over to side control.
8:Here they gripped our left leg at the bottom of the gi pants.We pulled our left leg out of the hook position,and grabbed their right gi cuff.Kicking our left leg back sharply,and pulling our hands towards us,we would break the grip,then pull the right arm across our right side,and repeat drill 7.
9:Here we would go for drill 7 again but as we kicked our right hook up and left hook out,we would use our hands to turn our partner in between our legs,and drop them in the space between,allowing us to get out grips to go for the rear naked choke.This is called”Pig on a Spit”.
1:We started with hooks and underhooks ,coming up and pulling our partner off their base,over and over.Keeping out elbows up high,and head low.
2:Here we started off with our feet in our partners hips,and controls of their sleeves,and our knees in their elbows.Our partner would give us some resistance and we would keep control.Then we would go for the following1: with our feet in hips,our right hand in their collar,and our left hand gripping their sleeve.From here we turned on our left side,kicked our right leg up under our partners left armpit,and pulled them over to mount.(2) They stand up and put 1 leg forward we would grab the leg,push the opposite hip back and put them on their butt(3)They came up onto 1 knee so we put out foot under that knee for the hook,pull their arms forward,and lift up that same knee for the hooking sweep.
3:Here we would start in drill 1 postion,and our partner would stand up,so we would go for the previous sweep Option 2),Then we would post on our left hand and jump back to our knees trapping their leg and still had control of their sleeve,ready to attack.
3B:Same start as drill 3,and as our partner stood up they would put their right leg forward instead of the left.We turned on our right side,and reached around to grab their left leg still,and placed our left toes in the centre of their stomach.With our right leg we put it under their right ankle,and pushed our left leg back,sweeping them over,and coming to our knees again ready for the attack.
4:Here we had hooks again,and had the right hand underhook,and left hand gripped their right hand.Falling to our left side,we kicked up our right hook,at the same time flipping over just before our shoulder touched the ground,and pulling our right hand up,ending up on our knees coming to side control.
5:Here we had double underhooks,and had our head down low as possible,rolling back over we had to rock form side to side to try and sweep.Our partner would try and counter by putting their hands on the mat.Our counter would be to take our hooks down,and capture their arms,and roll over to mount.
1:Tonight we started with our partner having us in side control,with both their arms over our left hand side.With our forearms we pushed against their ribs,to push them down to our thighs.We then bumped up(Like the hipout),and turned onto our right side,and brought our right knee through,and placed it between their legs for a hook.We then straightened up,and brought our left foot in between their legs for the other hook.We then came up and gave them a hug.
2:Same setup as drill 1 but this time when we brought our knee through,we straightened up and circled the leg on the outside,and placed it behing their back.We then brought the left leg into play by bringing it around the other side of their back, to take full guard.
3:Here we had our feet in our partners hips,and had control of their sleeves with our hands(No thumbs in for the illegal grip).We had control of their upper body.Our partner would be putting pressure on us by pushing forward,but our legs would be keeping them at bay.When we felt like it we,turned our our left side,and dropped our left leg down by their knee.We then kicked our shin into their left armpit,and swept them over to mount.
4:Same start controls as drill 3, but this time our parnter would come up on their left knee.We took our right foot off thier hip,and placed it behind their left knee for the hook(Toes pointing up,and our knee pulling back towards us).Dropping our left foot down by their right knee,we pulled them over for the sweep to mount.
5:Here we had the sames grips and hooks as drill 3 but our partner stood up and put their left foot forward.We let go of our right grip,and grabbed their foot.With our left foot we pushed them back,and pulled their left foot towards us sitting them down on the butt,putting out right knee up ready to pass.

6:We put it all together ,and our partner dictated what one of the above we would do by their actions.
1:We started with hooks and underhooks ,coming up and pulling our partner off their base,over and over.
2:Again we came up and pulled our partner off their base,coming down and lifting our right hook up,and grabbing their left arm and catching it behind our right ear,sweeping them over to the right hand side
3:Here we had hooks and came up and had our left hand overhooking and catching their right arm,and our right hand underhooking their left arm.We then rolled back and over our left side,kicking our right hook up and our left hook our sweeping them over, to our left side.
4:Here our partner was sitting on our hooks,and we grabbed their right arm and pulled it to our right hand side,and with our left hand we put it under their left armpit to grab their left lat.(Their right shoulder was in the centre of our chest).We lay back down and kicked our right hook up and our left hook our sweeping them over to our left side.
5:Same setup as drill 4 but our partner goes to posture up.With our right arm we capture their left hand behind our ear,and lifted our left hook up as we rolled back to sweep them to our right side.
6:Again we went for drill 4 but this time our partner postured up,and put their right leg up as we went to put their right arm to our right side.We then grabbed their right arm and placed it to our left side,and with our right hand grabbed their right lat.We then switched our right hook and placed it behind their right knee,and our left hook dropped to their right ankle.Kicking the left ankle out with our left hook
7:Here our partner is on our hooks but pushes our legs down to the ground on our left hand side,to start their pass.As they come around to our right hand side we grab their left hand and place it to our left side,and grabbed their right lat.We then pulled them over to our right side sweeping them over.
8:Again our partner pinned our legs to the left side.As they started to come around,we placed our right hand on their head by their neck,and stiff armed them to push their head down and moved,until our legs bacame free.
1:We started with hooks and underhooks pulling our partner off their base,over and over.
2:Hooks again with our partner giving us some resistance.Our aim being to sweep them
3:Hooks,and we pulled them off base,our partner would go to step over their left leg,so we dived down to take their right leg with our legs and arms(Horney Chihuahuia)
4:We would pre-empt drill 3,and not even wait for them to step over,and dive down to take the right leg.
5:We started in the Horney chihuahua,and crossed our legs on their right leg trapping it with our knees.We then rolled over onto our left side so we were facing the same way as our partner,and crossed and uncrossed our legs again,and used our right foot to hook their right leg,and our right hand to grab their belt,to push them up so we could duck out the back.
6:same setup again as drill 5 but this time both our arms were underneath their butt,grabbing their right leg.With our right foot we hooked their right leg again,lifting it right up,so we could duck out the back,
1: Here we had hooks,and double underhooks.We pulled our partner off their base,and rolled back onto our back,then came up again repeating the drill.
2:Again we had hooks and double underhoos, but when we came up this time we link are hands together really tight,and pulled them off thier base again.
3:Starting in drill 1 again,we came up and pulled our partner off base,With their left leg they went to step oner our right hook,so we dived deep down,and caught their right leg,with our knees and arms(Horney Chihuahua)
4:Here we had half guard and our partner stood up.With our right hand we grabbed their left ankle,and came around 90 degrees,and with our right foot which was behind their right knee we stretched it right out so we could get our left foot in their to take X-Guard
5:Same setup as drill 4 but our partner left their hands on the mat.We came around the 90 degrees again,stretched them out but this time we lifet their left foot over our head,and placed it on the other side.Spinning another 90 degrees,we used our right hand to grab their belt,push our hooks forward to dump them on their butt in front of us.
