Sunday the 17th of January Fundamentals

1:Tonight we started with lying on our backs with our hooks in,and our partner on their knees. We came up and got underhooks, then pulled our partner back down again, then came back up again, and repeated over and over.

2:Same setup as drill one but this time when we came up we,we our left hand got the overhook, and our right hand got the underhook, and our head was tucked in tight to the left hand side.We then lay back to roll over our left shoulder, and kicked our left leg away, sweeping them over and following them to mount.

3:Same drill as 2 but this time our partner gave us a bit of resistance.

4:Here we had side back control with the Seatbelt grip. Our partner would roll over and we would go with them with a willingness to follow them over.Even when we were on our back we still maintianed the Seatbelt grip.IF our partner would go back to their knees we would jump back over again.

5:Rear naked form knees. Here our partner was on their knees, and we were behind them.We slide our right hand under their chin, and grabbed our left shoulder, so that the V of our elbow was in their throat. Our chest was behind supporting their head.We then grabbed our left bicep with our right hand(Taking away all the space). With our left hand we bladed it into the back of their neck and puffed our chest up for the tap.

5B:A variation on drill 5.Same setup as drill 5 but instead of grabbing our left shoulder with our right hand,we placed it on their left shoulder,so that our forearm was bladed across their throat. We then cupped our hands in a gable grip, and pulled our elbows back towards us for the tap.

6:Here we had front control with our right hand between their arms, and our left hand under their right arm.We then used our right arm to grab their right bicep, and pulled it towards us,while shooting around to the left 90 degrees, and bringing our left knee between their right elbow and knee.We then switched our grips to get the seatbelt. They swept us over,so we got our hooks in, we ready to apply the Rear Naked Choke.

6B.Same setup as drill 6,but our partner posted up.We grabbed their right bicep, and arm dragged it forward, and came around to the left side to get Seatbelt grip, ready to pull them over so we were on our back.

6C:Our partner stayed on all fours so we took the back.

7:Here we had top control again, with our right hand between their arms, and our left hand underneath their right arm but in a loose grip.We then came around to the left hand side, and stepped our right leg over their head, and then sat back down on our butt, and swung our left leg over their back.We then slowly brought our arms towards us blading our forearm across their throat ofr the peruvian neck tie.

Thursday the 14th of January Fundamentals

1:Tonight we started with lying on our backs with our hooks in,and our partner on their knees. We came up and got underhooks, then pulled our partner back down again, thencame back up again, and repeated over and over.

2:Same setup as drill one but this time when we came up we,we our left hand got the overhook, and our right hand got the underhook, and our head was tucked in tight to the left hand side.We then lay back to roll over our left shoulder, and kciked our left leg away, sweeping them over and following them to mount.

3:Again hooks and on our back but our partner was based firmly on their knees with a good base.We came up and got underhooks, and shot our butt to our feet, closing the gap.(Staying connected and low) we then pulled them off their base again.

4:Same as drill 1 but this time our partner jumped to their feet and stood upright. We put our right hand through and passed their left ankle, and came around 90 degrees, and left out right leg out the back. With our left foot which was already behind the back of their knee,we stretched it out,and brought our right foot in front of their knee to X Guard pulling them backwards and passing their gaurd as they hit the mat either side.

4B:A variation on 4,as they stood up,they left their hands on the mat,so we proceeded to do all the X-gaurd stuff, and ducked out the back.

5:Here our partner had the hooks in.We cross gripped our left hand to grab their left hand, with our right hand we pushed their legs down to the left, and stepped our right leg over, and came around to side control.

6:Here we had half guard on our partner but they had the underhook on our left shoulder. With our right hand we blocked their left hip,and with our left hand we pulled their right arm in trapping it.With our left foot we hipped out to the left to create space, then brought our left foot in to hook their left leg.We then stretched our upper body out, then scooted our butt in,and rolled them over for the sweep.

7:We play pass or sweep starting in the hooks position.

GSW BJJ Wellington Classes start today!!!

The new Poneke Dojo site @ Prince of Wales Park is not going to be ready until the middle of he month. Rather than put off our start back time to match the new location, we have decided to run classes again at the old venue @ the Mt Vic Dojo.

It’ll be only for a couple of weeks until the new place is ready. So things will be a bit sparse and haphazard and to reflect this we’ll be running the classes as No-Gi. All GSW members are welcome and I assume a few new members will pop down to check us out as well for the new year.

So Normal classes resume today Sunday 10th January 2010 6pm No-Gi Techniques and 7pm No-Gi rolling.
Please wear shorts or Gi pants and a rashie or tee (Tees will be stretched so make sure it’s an oldie)
Do not wear anything with extra pockets, belt loops or baggy fabric. These are dangerous since fingers and toes can get caught in them. Baggy cargo shorts are an example of what not to wear.

Monday and Wednesday classes will be in the Lower Hutt club and will be No-Gi until further notice.

Hope to see you all there.

BJJ Lower Hutt First class of the year 04/01/2010

The first class back for GSW in Lower Hutt and a good turnout of almost 30 people on the mat.

The class covered chokes mainly from the sprawl position.

  • First we started with a quick review of the standard Guillotine from the closed guard. This gave us several simple principals that we could then apply to techniques later in the class.
  • Next was the Anaconda choke from the sprawl position.  We take a loose seatbelt grip, right bicep in front of their collar bone, left arm under their armpit. Our Right arm traps their right tricep and then we place our right hand in our left bicep. From there we apply pressure by bringing our elbows together and then roll under their body. Once we’re on our backs we walk our legs towards their body and apply more pressure for the tap.

  • Darce Choke – From the same sprawl position with the seatbelt grips. This time we move our body to the left and align ourselves with their shoulders. At the same time we push our left arm deep so our left hand is up by their neck. We then clasp palms and drive our right forearm across their neck forcing them onto their left side on the mat. We then push our left arm out the back of their shoulders and clasp our right bicep, placing our right hand on their back. We then switch our base towards their legs and use our body to apply pressure to the back of their tricep.

  • Peruvian necktie - Same grips as before, same angle change, but this time we jump up to a squat and step our right leg over their head as we sit back, we bring our left leg over their back so they cannot roll out of the choke.

  • Rolling Lapel Half Nelson – as we had a few minutes left I added this choke to the end of the class. Although not strictly of the same type of chokes it is applied from the same sprawl position. This time from the sprawl we place our right hand under their chin and grab their opposite lapel with a pistol grip (four fingers in the collar). From their our left hand comes under their right armpit and then behind their head. We use our left hand to pull their elbow out of the way so we can roll under their body. When we are on our back we extend our left arm behind their head and support it with our left knee, using the leverage and pull their lapel with our right hand for the tap.

Things to thnk about for the coming year.

Set small goals. – simple obtainable goals will help you see your progress far better than general long term aims. In BJJ it’s the little things that make all the difference. Lasting a round before being submitted by the Blue Belts, escaping side control quickly where you would normally take minutes, holding a strong position where normally the person would escape easily. These sort of goals will help focus your game and give you an idea of how your progressing on the mat.

Drill – at the beginning or end of ever session, grab a willing partner and rep out a technique 20, 30, 40 or 50 times. It could be a technique you just learnt in the last class or something you need to add to your game. Drilling the technique will help cement it into you game all the quicker. But remember “Practice Makes Permanent” so make sure you understand the technique before you rep 50 sloppy versions.

Game Diagnostics tool – Don’t forget to grab a cop of Johns Game Diagnostics tool from the club. An awesome tool to assist in recognising your “IA” (Immediate Action) from any given position: http://bjj-australia.blogspot.com/2008/11/game-diagnostics.html

Thursday the 17th of December Fundamentals

Last Official class of the year.

1:Tonight we started off with our feet in hips, our right hand in their collar, and our left hand gripping their sleeve. From here we turned on our left side, kicked our right leg up under our partners left armpit, and pulled them over to mountor.(2) They stand up and put 1 leg forward we would grab the leg, push the opposite hip back and put them on their butt(3)They came up onto 1 knee so we put out foot under that knee for the hook, pull their arms forward, and lift up that same knee for the hooking sweep.

2:Here we had feet in hips, and right hand in the collar, and went for the basic sweep to mount.Once to mount we posted our left hand out and cut it into their left side collar, and put our thumb in.(Remembering our right hand was still in the right side).Placing our head on the mat to avoid our partner bridging, we pulled our elbows towards us stretching up for the choke.

3:Here we had knee ride with our right hand in the back of their far collar, and our right hand in the near side.We then brought our elbows together, and transferred all our weight bringing our knees to the ground, blading the left hand across their throat for the choke.

4:Again we had knee ride with our right hand in their near collar, but our partner went to defend by bringing their arms up.We then pulled our right hand out  placed our left hand in their right collar. With the left elbow we spun to their right and placed it on their left side across their throat. We then placed our right hand in their right side collar and came back around to the front. We then put our right shoulder on their belly on their left side and our head on the mat and did a tripod up,pulling our elbows up for the choke.

5:Here we had hooks with our right hand in their left collar, and our left hand in their right collar.Placing both our legs to the left side, our partner would run around to the right side to pass our guard,so we at the same time walked 90 degrees around to the left bringing our elbows together for the choke.

5B:Same setup as drill 5 but instead of us walking around to the 90 degrees we ran 180 pulling our partner to the mat flat on their back.Because we still had the grips blading our right hand across their neck for the choke.

6:Here we had side control. Our left hand grabbed their legt gi collar and fed it underneath thier head to pass it to our right hand(freeing up our left hand) to place it on the left side of their head.We then captured their left arm so their elbow was in our left armpit. We then put pressure down on their left arm with our whole body weight (This was almost like a cross face) putting pressure on them for the choke.

7:Here we had switched base side control, and our partner put their arms up to defend. We grabbed our own gi on the right side, and pulled this out and put it around their neck.We then grabbed the gi with our right hand, and walked around to the opposite side bringing on the choke

Merry Christmas eveybody, see you in the new year.

Sunday the 13th of December Fundamentals

1:Tonight we started off with our partner being on mount, and we had to escape.

2:Here our partner had mount and was leaning forward with their hands on the mat.We placed our feet between their feet, and our hands on their hips.We then bridged up,and straightened our arms locking them in place, suspending our partner in the air. From here we brought our knees through, and let our arms down sitting our partner on our hooks. We then grabbed the under/over grips, and rolled onto our left shoulder sweeping them over.

3:Here we had mount on our partner, and brought our left leg up.As we did this our partner slipped their right hand under our left leg to try a for an escape. We shot our left leg back down trapping their arm,and brought our right knee up to their head and grabbed their right arm.Putting all our weight on our left knee,we flipped our right leg under their head,so our calf muscle was under the back of their neck.We then rolled to our right onto our back, and grabbed our chin with our left hand.Swinging our left leg over our right,we squeezed down for the triangle.

4:Here our partner had mount and we put our right hand under their left leg.Our partner then attempted to go for drill 3 but before they could swing up,we put our left hand underneath their right leg,and pushed them up,so we could duck out the back.

4B:Again our partner had mount, and we had our left arm under their left leg.We dropped our left leg down, and bridged up and over to our left, sweeping our partner over.

5:Here our partner had side control, and we to swing their right leg over our belly to go to mount. With our left hand we placed it on their right knee to fake pushing the knee back.At the same time our right hand grabbed their left leg.As they put their right knee on the ground,we lifted their left leg up,and brought our right leg through to get a hook,or wrap our legs around their left leg to get half guard.

Thursday the 10th of December Fundamentals

1:Tonight we started off with our feet in hips, our right hand in their collar, and our left hand gripping their sleeve. From here we turned on our left side, kicked our right leg up under our partners left armpit, and pulled them over to mountor.(2) They stand up and put 1 leg forward we would grab the leg, push the opposite hip back and put them on their butt(3)They came up onto 1 knee so we put out foot under that knee for the hook, pull their arms forward, and lift up that same knee for the hooking sweep.

2:Basic Sweep:Here we had our partner in guard, with control of their collar with our right hand and control of their right sleeve with our left hand.Dropping our legs to the mat,we hipped to our left side, and put our right leg across their belly, and dropped our left leg to the ground.(our arms were also bent).Using our whole core,we brought them forward, kicking our left leg underneath to sweep our partner to mount.

2B:When then did our opposite gammy side

3:We went for the basic sweep 10 times (Drill 2) and our partner gave us mild resistance.

4:We again did basic sweep 10 times, but our partner gave us a lot of resisitance.

5:(Armbar form Mount)We had low mount and our partner went to push us away with their arms on our chest.Circling the right hand with both our arms,we jumped up and put our left leg over their head, and right leg over their chest capturing the arm,to go for the armbar  but would lie back, and swing our leg back to mount, and do the opposite side repeating the drill over and over.

6:Guard again:We dropped the legs, and captires their right arm to the centre of our chest.Lifting our hips and coming 90 degrees to the right we swung our left leg over their head,so the back of our knee was over their neck.We then swung back to our orginal position, repaeating the drill on the opposite side, over and over.

Sunday the 6th of December Fundamentals

Congratulations to Andrew on his Bluebelt.

1:Tonight we started with our feet in our partners hips and we had control of their wrist,or gi cuffs(Thumbs out).We had 3 choices(1) Turn on right hip and put our knee across their belly, pull them forward for the sweep (2) They stand up and put 1 leg forward we would grab the leg, push the opposite hip back and put them on their butt(3)They came up onto 1 knee so we put out foot under that knee for the hook, pull their arms forward, and lift up that same knee for the hooking sweep.

2:Here we had our partner on our hooks, and our partner had their hands on our knees. We came up and got double underhooks, and roll back onto out back,as we came back up we scooted our legs away from us,and placed our partner back on the mat.We repaeted the drill until we got all the way down the mat.

3: Again our partner on our hooks as we came up our right hand overhooking their left arm,and our left hand underhooking their right arm.We rolled to our right side, and kicked our left hook up ,and our right foot away rolling to side control.

4:Here we had hooks again and our partner grabbed our knees. We came up and gradded their right sleeve with both ahnds, and arm dragged them forward, to all fours on the mat on our right side. With our left hand we grabbed under their left Lat,bringing our hips back and shooted our butt in, we then rolled back to our left side sweeping then over to Side control.

5:A variation on drill 4:Here we went for 4 but our partner sat back on their heels. We posted with our right hand on the mat,and brought our left leg through to the right side.Using momentum we pushed through and now with the right hand we grabbed their left arm which was posting on the mat, sweeping them over to side controls.

6:Another varition on drill 4;We went for drill 4 but they sat back on their heels. We then changed our game and went for drill 5 but before we could get out left leg through they drove us forward.Because we still had our left hand attached to their lat,and our knee across their belly,we rolled back, and swept them over to our left side to side control.

7:A variation on drill 6.As we rolled back we capture their right leg with our hands, and put our right leg under, and our left leg over their thigh, squeezing our knees together, and extending ourselves out locking on the knee bar.

Thursday the 3rd of December Fundamentals

1:Tonight we started with our partner on our hooks, with out right hand overhooking their left arm,and our left hand underhooking their right arm.We rolled to our right side, and kicked our left hook up ,rolling to mount.

2:Here our partner had mount, with arm forward on the mat.We placed our hands on their hips, and bridged up holding them in mid air, while bringing our legs through to bring them to hooks.

3:Here our partner had side control and had switched base so their right leg was right by our head.using our left hand, we gripped the near collar lapel, and dropped our legs down, while pushing the lapel towards our feet.We then tucked our legs under dropping them on their back to come to side control.

4:We strated off in drill 1(Overhook,underhook) and swept our partner to side control, switching base.THey then went for drill 3.

5:Here we had feet in hips, and grips in sleeves, and our partner stood up leaning forward. We pulled them up off their base and locked our legs suspending them in mid air.We kicked our left leg out, while pulling with our left hand, and pushing their shoulder with our right hand. This caused our partner to spin between our legs, while trapping their right arm.We then swung our left leg over their head, squeezed our knees, welded their little finger to our chest, and bridged up for the arm bar.

6:Here our partner was on all fours, and we were sprawled.Reaching with our right hand we went in front of their arms and grabbed their right collar. Our left hand came up behind and underneath their left arm,and we placed it on the back of their neck.Pulling our left arm towards us to create space,we put our head in the hole, and rolled them over the top of us,When were came to our back we placed our right knee under the back of their head, and walked around, taking out all the space bring on the choke.
